This will be the thread that we use for the submissions for the February member spotlight. It will be only v5 series forums right now, since v6 is still in beta as of this writing. It is also the last chance to become eligible for the six month grand prize. You can either post your site in this thread, or post in a separate thread, but please put in the title something about Feb. submission, etc. Thanks.

Beginning in April, we will begin judging v6 sites and only v6 sites, but the same rules will still apply. Modifications are only 20% of the score. Site integration, design, color scheme, and user experience are also judged.

Yes, it's just v5 right now... starting with the next one in April, it'll be just v6 from then on, so we'll hear from those with v5 about it not being fair either... smile

Good luck everyone who has entered so far, some very nice sites. Entry deadline is midnight on the 15th (I guess that would be 11:59pm on the 15th, right before the 16th).

Oh the contrary. Failure of any site doesn't make me happy. There are several people over there who can be quite creative when they want to be. I have no interest in seeing 411hype fail whatsoever, and I have helped them many times over the last few months answering questions via ICQ, etc. I'm sure they're more rightfully concerned with who's been hacking their boards frequently. Heh.

I was only clarifying since 6.0 sites weren't allowed in this contest. Seemed like an innocent misread of Allen's post.

Lastly, I took a quick visit to see how things were progressing, and I'm not sure how their 6.0 could be judged for the contest even if it were allowed since it's barely customized whatsoever from out of the box. laugh That's some brass balls!

Allen,

Just out of curiosity what browsers will the judges be using? Also can we get a break down of the criteria the judges will be using? Like 20% hacks, 20% design, 20% tech and etc...

Dawg,

Thanks Dawg for the compliments!! Your site is way killer!! Looks as if the contest will be close.

Best o luck to everyone.

Posted By: Lucia Re: Member Spotlight - February '01 Edition - 02/08/2001 8:23 PM
well it looks okay in NS, but not great.. frown bane of my life..

Trouble was I spent a lot of time redesigning the way the forum would look, because IMho the default UBB looks really cluttered.. but every so often, I guess I screwed up a table tag, and just don't have the heart to rework it so it works in opera too (opera only accepts totally valid html, so must be that I suck.. ahh well)
Rodster, all criteria are judged equally, appropriate modifications, color scheme, site integration, user experience, and design. If one of them is absent (for instance, if your forum is not integrated into your site at all, just a link from your home page), then that is enough to most likely eliminate it from consideration for the top spots, the rest are just that good.

Most judges use IE, a few use NS, I don't know of anyone that uses opera. If your site isn't viewable in NS, then that falls under the "design" category and will get it eliminated.
Posted By: Lucia Re: Member Spotlight - February '01 Edition - 02/08/2001 11:40 PM
Oh its viewable, workable all that stuff, just looks crappy.. and hence thats why I'm not entering..
Posted By: Mafuh Re: Member Spotlight - February '01 Edition - 02/08/2001 11:46 PM
phew, my board looks:
-nice in IE5.5
-nice in opera
-okay in Netscape
Allen,

I think all UBBs have viewing probs in netscape. Especailly ones with long topics and a complex layout may take a while. Even on a high speed line it may take sometime for 'NutScrape' to render the complex UBB tables. So how long then will a judge wait on a page to consider it 'unviewable' in NS? I dont mean to be picky, I just wanted to put it out there for everyone to be aware of.
------------

Dawg,

I may take up your offer on affiliate. I will let you know. laugh

[ February 08, 2001: Message edited by: rodsterAce ]
smile
We have patience, and understand NS's slow loading times of complex tables. We discuss these things when judging the sites, if it isn't loading for one, we double check it to make sure...

Some sites will not load no matter how long you wait tho, it's just poor table coding that causes that usually.... we actually had the same problem back when we opened in September, none of the threads would load in NS, until we fixed some coding errors.

For something interesting to check out, load this site in NS6, the dhtml doesn't work (thanks to C_P for pointing it out - I forgot to check NS6), so for all those who copied our files ;), you and I have some work to do still...

i know mafuh, this is the worst time for hackers, we got hit before the january spotlight. it seems that people are hacking forums to give themselves a better chance. I don't understand it if u ask me, i think it's kinda pathetic.

we know FOR A FACT that it was a ubb developer who hit us last month. but ya can't do anything cept upload yer backups and walk away

Well if you want to drive yourself nuts, check your site in IE 5.5 , Netscape 6.0 and Netscape 4.7X. Netscape 6.0 has some major bugs. No wonder the report I read said Netscape is losing ground, anfd people are uisng IE. I switched after 2-3 years of using netscape..

One bug I just noticed is the first line of a post is in default text, the rest is in the font chosen..

Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

[*]Very helpfull linx to each forum on main pg

most of my members just think the control panel link is an image. the majority just think that frame IS the cp.

my forums are average in netscape, they run, ppl can post... but some of the formating is off, but netscape does suck.

As for the design integration, it canot be done, because our website uses 2 designs, mainpage and template and the template isn't ready yet, thus the lack of integration.

wish me luck. if this is last change for 5.xx versions, the is my last entry.
