UBBDEV Members:
As ubb6 comes into full ball tommorow, January 31, we would like to get started on the first set of UBB6 hacks! Not just me, but this is for anyone who feels they want to make a hack. YOu know cal, Charles Capps, me, borg, Jigga Master and others are creating hacks which is stated in my previous post. But we always look for good ideas for new mods! You will be given credit for the idea (unless its been stated beforehand) in the docs and if the mod is possible, it might get done! (Am i starting to sound like DB?)

Read my previous thread below to find out whats already in the works.

i would like to see a 'hack' where as by checking just one check-box all of your forums styles are made the same as your default style (if that makes sense). maybe sumthing like this is already in ubb6 but if itsa not will some-one plz create it!!!
Posted By: Greg Hard Re: Taking in hack requests - 01/30/2001 10:18 PM
Thanks for replying!
UBB6 handles styles with templates allowing you to reset them to any color you want without deleting previous styles.

Could it be possible to make a hack where a poll feature is included, much like what EZBoard uses? I've tried to insert html from places like pollit.com, etc, but it doesn't turn out just the way I like it. These polls would make things a bit more fun and interactive. Thanks

UBB Code Buttons?

I know that some of the features are integrated in UBB6.0.

But what about this??
My users love this feature!!!

It's the first thing they want added back in every time I upgrade the version.

MM, ... i have an idea, but i don't know if it's possible to make, but who knows. i am sure that there will be a posts and topics counter too for the ubb6 version, but a counter which displays how many posts are done since your last visit would be better, or a combo. what do u think about this?

MrBill - Yes, ubbcodebuttons is in UBB6 - but not the colors, sizes, etc. I will be taking that on by putting all the codes in - then simple adding the JS button to go with it.

h4p3- more difficult with caching, but possible. I'll check with "cache-people" on that. [Linked Image]

DJL - me too. I'll see about it.

A simple request. Custom user text redone for UBB6, if needed. The one the admin submits from the cp and allows html.

Remember guys, the cache is going to make stuff a little more difficult in UBB6.

The thread view counter will be difficult, if not impossible to achieve easily, unless some really, really sneaky stuff is pulled off...

*edit* Custom user text is so simple that it's silly... You can achieve that through assgining one of the four avaiable extra fields in the Control Panel, then printing the field where required in the template. [Linked Image]

There will be a need to move these icons

to the bottom of the posts again. If you look at UBB6 you'll notice the more icons at the top it starts a additional line. Not very attractive. Yes I know its simple, most likely. Just nice to have it documented.

I can't remember if this has been mentioned in your previous thread or not... but I would like to see the "Latest Threads" SSI pull to use that on another page, like UBBDev has here... Well, that's my request.

i have a idea, how about making a hack that would combine UBB6 and Image Arcadia (my new favorite image indexing cgi)

so you could put code like [image132] and it would show a image from image arcadia's archive.

or you could make it print the tables and stuff in UBB posts, seeing as it has a template option.

I hope by this you don't mean that you're trying to take over my hacks (OK, admittedly Memberlist isn't mine, I took over with v2.0 from Jeff Ross), that wouldn't be very friendly.

One thing to add, and this goes for all hack/module/whatever writers, please, please, please respect mod_perl! Don't take the easy way out by disabling the features that allows mod_perl to run, just so you can write sloppy code. Learn the cache and template systems and make them your friend. The Memberlist add-on is as guilty as any of them for using patched together code, but that's why I'm rewriting it from scratch for UBB6, and fully intend to make it compatible with mod_perl, caching, and templates.

Let's write this code correctly the first time folks. [Linked Image]

I've wanted these 3 for some time now (and have posted about them in the suggestions forum, but since it was just weeks away from 6.0 they were probably a 'moot' point).

Anyway, here they are:

Country Profile Hack With Flag Display
--------------------------------------

I have a large collection of mini-flags, and I would like to be able to display a little flag under each persons name/avatar area so people can see where that person lives via a image.

For a link to the images:
http://www.eternia.com/flags.zip

Birthday Profile Field & Birthday Image Display!
---------------------------------------

Once a member's birthday comes around, it displays a little birthday hat icon in his posts that day.

Both of these have been done before for "other software", and they would add a notch to the coolness factor.

Favorite Quote
--------------

Pick a random quote (that users enter into their profiles), and display them on either the forums front page, and/or via an ssi call via any .shtml file.

Thanks for the opportunity, MM! [Linked Image]

For the record, I'm working on cache-disabling and style template rotation.
Posted By: Charles Capps Re: Taking in hack requests - 01/31/2001 11:43 PM
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DISABLE THE CACHE AS A HACK.

Two reasons.

One, it can be already be disabled through the control panel.

Two, it will be a *TREMENDOUS* LOAD on your server. You will bring your server to a SCREECHING HALT.

DO NOT bypass the cache!

Agreed Charles and Leshrac...

One thing we'll need to tackle first is assigning profile fields to any modification that uses one... Navaho has already mentioned this in one thread. Assign now and it's yours to keep. Will be a huge time saver in the future regarding trouble-shooting and upgrading... and assist borg as well in his standardization for his vinkulum work.

Starting tomorrow I'll start a thread in the beta 6 forum regarding this... it will operate on a first come - first served principle, unless the majority agrees that it would be best for one to have precedence over another. We'll map out what fields are already standard for v6, leave them some growing room, and go from there... it is quite possible your mod might have field 51 assigned to it... Alien might want that one for his flags...[Linked Image]

Is anyone working on making Sticky Threads UBB6 compatible?
Posted By: Arie_S Re: Taking in hack requests - 02/01/2001 1:57 AM
Charles Capps: So it won't even work? That's a bummer!

speed: That is only going to give you a few hit's a day. Submitting the individual pages has all the advantages. People search for a specific problem. For example, execute this Google search for crs32.dll 1st page is my BB. Good for 200 hits a month. winsvrc.exe , 2nd position, over 7,500 hits since November 21....

So that's why!
Posted By: cal Re: Taking in hack requests - 02/01/2001 2:36 AM
The news fader (at least, the clientside fading javascript) is my work. It will be VERY possible to do even with the cache. For those of you who study it, it uses javascript to write the content. It just needs the actual headlines to be pulled in via a non-cached javascript.

Just a thought [Linked Image]

Posted By: Charles Capps Re: Taking in hack requests - 02/01/2001 2:54 AM
Arie_S: Nope, it's most certainly possible. You just need to think outside of the box. Your problem can be solved very, very easily, without having to change much about the way UBB works, with luck. See your other thread .

(Okey, so getting SSI to call a CGI script and pass params might be a stretch to get working, but it CAN be figured out... [Linked Image])
