Alright, just finished making a post to the design contest topic in announcements, which spurred me to make this topic.

I'd like to know what you all consider good website design. What sites have you seen and can point us to, are ones which exemplify everything you believe good in webdesign?... Conversely, are there any sites you've seen that are worse than bad or inept, rather, totally misguided.

Please, before we begin, I'd like everyone to stay calm and rational. This is a subjective subject, and noone should be attacked for opinions different to your own. I'd prefer it if examples used weren't those of people who visit ubbdev, rather I'm thinking of company pages, or something you saw whilst traversing the web, that you think would make a good example of your argument.

Got that? Remain polite at all times, or I'll slap you with my spoon of retribution.

To start, this site is one that I was particularly impressed with.. check out the navigation system.. very unique and appropriate for the site

A site that is well presented and simple to navigate with no hidden twists or side routes, yet still remaining creative and interesting, is what i call good design.

And hopefully one day i will figure out how to do it. tipsy

Nice!!

http://www.k10k.co.uk/ has always impressed me- the "pixel" look seems to be in at the minute, but that place does it especially well.

http://www.k10k.net - now there's a nice looking site!

As a reminder, everyone keep their posts out of the realm of slander and libel... or we'll sue.. wink

http://www.zyklontribe.com/

Some band called Zyklon..... The imagery used by the band is frankly stupid (They look like extras from The Matrix for christs sake!!) But the site itself is pretty good.

Pet Peeve in webdesign.. when the page has a hugely large white space at the right side of the screen... I know that means they designed the pages to be viewable at a smaller resolution, but couldn't they at least have centered the page? Looks so retarded...
Posted By: Ell Re: Design - 02/28/2001 7:20 PM
Agreed... is a
tag soo damned impossible to add?

Any site that's blatantly designed at 800x600 annoys the hell out of me... things should be scalable.
Posted By: Phil Re: Design - 02/28/2001 7:33 PM
My site is totally scalable and can even be viewed at resolutions BELOW 800x600 yet i STILL get people saying thatt its doesnt display right......

God knows what browser they must be using cos i tested it out in Opera, Ie, Netscape 4.7 and 6.0 and it looked fine......
Posted By: Lucia Re: Design - 02/28/2001 8:40 PM
Yeah, preferably scaleable, but at least if you can't do that, center it.. I REALLY hate the space on the right side..

Hell, I could live with a space on the left, just because it would be better

Your navigation links are left-aligned, along with the image, but your text at the bottom is centered. Just an observation, you might want to choose one or the other.

hmmmm. just like here - nevermind laugh

I like to check out the sites at http://www.coolhomepages.com for good examples of great design.
