Who ever uses a html editor?
Posted By: navaho Re: HTML editor [Poll] - 06/01/2001 8:17 AM
Started on notepad, went to PFE, lately using Ultraedit32.

I hates WYSIWYGs to pieces since they never do what I want and I always end up fixing the mess they make when I try to use them. On top of that some are optimized for MS, some for IE. None of them work perfectly for all.
Posted By: LK Re: HTML editor [Poll] - 06/01/2001 12:30 PM
Notepad

i make mine the real way.
Posted By: Matt Jacob Re: HTML editor [Poll] - 06/01/2001 11:13 PM
ahhh, the real way... you're obviously talking about hand-rolling the dough, chopping your own garden-fresh vegetables, and making your sauce from scratch. hmm, maybe that's the real way to make a pizza. laugh

but seriously, there is no "real way" to make web pages. writing it by hand is just as "real" as using a wysiwyg editor, is it not? it all depends on what you're trained to use. but saying that using a wysiwyg editor isn't the "real" way is just ignorant.

I'm with CC on this; I write it by hand using UltraEdit .
Posted By: Matt Jacob Re: HTML editor [Poll] - 06/07/2001 10:16 PM
i find it pretty funny that most of the people's pages who said they write their own html don't even validate. so i guess that just because you do it by hand, it doesn't mean you're any good at it. laugh

..
Posted By: Troy Re: HTML editor [Poll] - 06/14/2001 5:57 PM
Frontpage, and manual edits with UltraEdit.

Anyone that says they do it the "real way" are funny. If you worked on a computer the "real way" you wouldn't have a GUI of any sort.

I guess "real way" in that sense means the "first way" and usually the most difficult. I use what gets the job done. smile

Tell ya what Matt, let me tell you how I see it. When w3.org's own webpage validates without warnings then I will worry or care about it. Who are they to tell me what is or is not valid when they cannot get it right themselves? mad

I have on word for it, and it starts with bull...............

All I care about is whether it looks alright in Nescape and I.E. Have you ever noticed that what they call "valid" does not render the same in both browsers? You may say that one of the browsers is broke. I call that a cop out and say your HTML is broke if you can't code for both of them and make it look the same in each.

Every bit of HTML code that I have ever done looked exactly the same in Netscape as it did in I.E., but yet it's not valid HTML? Bull.............. mad

Sorry Matt. You really struck a nerve there... frown Didn't mean to pick on you.
Posted By: Carmack Re: HTML editor [Poll] - 06/19/2001 7:13 AM
Mostly, I just write my own in UltraEdit. When I do stuff for money, I use DreamWeaver so that I don't spend so much time coding and the client doesn't get angry at me for padding the bill.

Obviously, just because it has warnings, it doesn't mean that the code is invalid. They know that, which is why they ignored it.

Any village idiot can produce a web site nowadays using Frontpage, Dreamweaver, etc. The village idiots are now competing in the space of the "true" web developers that learned how to hard code html from day one. The hard coders were too proud to use WYSIWYG, and continued developing the archaic way.

I was fortunate enough to learn both methods- hard coding and WYSIWYG. Both have their place in web development. I'm even humble enough to say the I like FrontPage. I like Dreamweaver. I like Homesite. I like Cold Fusion. Each software also allows me to hardcode, if I need to make subtle changes, or allows me to feel like an ancient html hardcoder folkhero.

For those that pompously proclaim that they use noted or notepad, I bet they use windows or solaris, or irix. Why not be totally pompous and tell everyone that you think in pure binary, or hexadecimal, and all your coding is done in assembly.

Oh, and one more thing... the newest paradigm is Ultradev. When are we going to hear from the old school db heros that Ultradev sucks? I can't wait to fight that one.

Everybody's technical net worth is now equal. And this bothers people. My advice: Embrace change.
