I have to admit that I have a blog site now. I use it for hosting my resume and online projects etc. so I have to be careful about the subjects I include. I've seen Charles' site and I'm wondering who else here has one?

Second question is what blogging software do you like? Movable Type is amazing and I started off with that but I changed over to pMachine from www.pmachine.com because I wanted to use php and MySQL. Movable Type is Perl based and it is a really amazing system.

Click here and please give your feedback. Portions of the site are not complete but the front end works and it is compliant.

My days are already too busy so I must really be a masochist to have a blog and continue to attempt to post something clever there every single day. Then, to make things worse I spend 30-45 minutes reading several dozen of my favorite blogs.

heh I didn't know CC had one
/me blogrolls it

I currently use MT for my blog. I also use MT as a CMS on a few other sites. A couple months ago I've even started the process of coding new templates and customizing MT to run BowlingFans.com . However, I recently discovered pMachine and have been thinking about using that instead. I'm still undecided. (BTW, MT can use PHP and MySQL too.)

Your blog looks nice, so I've added it to my blogroll. But why do you call it "rm.com" when thats not your domain? confused
Posted By: RandyM Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 01/31/2003 7:53 AM
The rm.com is just a placeholder till I come up with something clever...I love that font but it will change when I finalize the logo.

blog.robkamphausen.com is where i've resided for over 2 years now.

and i just use good ole infopop mb's -- a separate forum i've editted to run backwards (i.e; most recent post goes on top).

i used to just manually update an html file, myself! then i started lookin around at sites like blogger.com, and figured i'd head in that direction. but once i got more into ultimate bb stuff, i just converted one of those forums into my online journal.

works purdy good!

This week something went wrong on my sever and all my MT databases got corrupt. I have recent backups of most of the data but I don't have time to reconstitute it all.

Once I do find some time, now more than ever I'm considering moving to pMachine DPT MT's recent improvements.

blogs - leave 'em. They dont really turn me on in the least, i got too much code to write to be a blogger.

But in fairness - I have recently seen them put to very good use in the area of Win32 development and i have a few on my favorites list. Places where some hardcore codemonkey records his or her findings, lessons learned the hard way, and other key links and feedback on experiments with new technologies and/or beta stuff. This kinda blog makes for a very useful and fast jump-start for when the release version comes out and your not up-to-snuff on the community learning curve the beta version junkies already conquered. Much quicker to scan-n-salvage tasty nuggets from a blog vs. drilling endlessly in newsgroup reader. Only downside being -no matter how serious a blog is, you inevitable have to tune out atleast 2 or 3 ugggg insights on either A)the family dog, B)the hated neighbor, or C) the dreaded exwife smile

Ouch, I was thinking about trying out movable type for a community instead of having something programmed myself, guess that idea is a flop :x...

One thing they should have done, which they may, make the new version and make it pay, THEN release a bunch of the exploits and strongly urge everyone to upgrade... It'd peeve everyone off :x

pmachine is taking advantage of their mess:

http://www.pmachine.com/

They're giving away 1000 copies to those who switch laugh
Posted By: usr bin geek Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 05/19/2004 3:07 AM
I've donated for all my copies of MT but after these drastic license changes and the pricing hike I'm done using MT. As far as I'm concerned SixApart can no longer be trusted. They've backpedaled a little over the past few days but it still isn't enough. It wasn't reasonable for them to even think about making the kinds of changes they first announced.... When most people started using MT, it was free for noncommercial use and there was never any hint of it being a "commercial product" or a money making venture and only TypePad was always supposed to be the profit wing of the company. Instead they tricked the blogging community into using it, developing addons, plugins, templates, and hacks and now that it has a huge user base and a lot of things developed for it they're going to pull a fast one and begin charging unreasonable fees.

As soon as I have some time I'm going to switch all my sites that use MT, over to WordPress . Its free, open source, and just as feature rich. In addition, its released under GPL, so I'll never have to worry about being forced to pay ridiculous and arbitrary fees for features that should have simply been included in the first place.
Posted By: Gizmo Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 05/19/2004 6:45 AM
Gimme your MT! lol... I'd like to play with it; old version anyway heh.
Posted By: usr bin geek Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 05/19/2004 3:54 PM
You can still download 2.661 which remains free for noncommercial use.
Posted By: AllenAyres Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 05/20/2004 1:52 AM
3.0 is still available for free, isn't it?

http://secure.sixapart.com/

There's a whole box in the right hand column about getting it for free.
Posted By: Gizmo Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 05/20/2004 5:31 AM
It's free but you can only have like 3 authors... So if you were planning on making a blog site you're kinda backed over a table as you can only ahve 3 users...
Posted By: AllenAyres Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 05/20/2004 4:56 PM
true, but I imagine ~80%+ of the users would fall under the one author rule smile
Posted By: usr bin geek Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 05/20/2004 8:10 PM
Almost all the most popular (noncommercial) blogs have multiple authors and many bloggers host a few of their friends' blogs so that purposely low limit is to an attempt to grab money for what was promised to always be a free program for noncommercial use.
Posted By: AllenAyres Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 05/20/2004 9:11 PM
Difficult for me to say... there is a free version available still. Kinda hard to pay bills while giving away all your work too.

I can only think of phpbb as the only decent free internet software app that still remains free after all these years.

Free software either gets real popular or dies.

Real popular free software gains lots of followers who make constant constraints on your time, usually requiring lots of support.

Developer is either independently wealthy or gives up after a while, or begins aking for money for his time.
Posted By: Gizmo Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 05/21/2004 7:36 AM
Well i can understand a slight price, $20, something reasonable; but the direct jump up that high? and even then it's limited lol...
Posted By: usr bin geek Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 05/21/2004 5:25 PM
exactly Grizzy. Most bloggers would happily pay $30-50 but for most people this will cost up wards of a few hundred dollars.
Posted By: AllenAyres Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 05/22/2004 12:46 AM
Perhaps, but anyone who's been around any script site that went from free to paid (ubb in the version 4 era) always has the same complaints. Whatever the pricing model, it's too high. Voting with your pocketbook by not buying is really the only say we have in something like this.

Still, there's still a free version available, and version 2.661 works well for 95+% of the people smile

There's really no difference between a blog and any of the ubbnews apps in basic function. Both would have their strong points in use as a blog smile

My personal about Blog's: waste of time and hype topic.

I see this is a thing used by internet user from specific countrys. Here in Germany it's not a big topic. If you ask someone some people knows what a Blog is but few people use one.

I dont use one.
Posted By: RoxSeibert Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 08/06/2006 5:40 PM
fwiw - i've recently changed my mind about blogs, atleast in regards to putting them too good use in non-traditional way (for-business-purposes rather than for the usual personal 'me-generation' journal type thing)

my first blog venture was for a website customer that wanted a way to post sales & inventory related announcements easily without my help http://tankdr.blogspot.com

that went over so well, i sat back and seriously thought about non-traditional uses for a blog, and came up with a great idea for my ubb site... one big downside of a messageboard is that valueable info in a chatty community can get drowned out and scattered around. and since my community isnt real techy savvy, lots of folks said they couldnt find something after it faded abit. for us - that was key race event info.

so we started a "race blog" for the current race season where it's like a showcase catalog of race reports and links to all the important stuff related to a given event.

http://dballey.blogspot.com/

and we're using a couple of 3rd party moblogging (mobile blogging) services so that race reporters can post stuff on the blog right from the race. i was a lil scared this would be abit too newfangled for folks to take an instant liking too but i was wrong -> response has been fantastic!! and the racers love it cuz they point their sponsors to simple lowfat one-stop-shopping place to see just what the sponsor wants to know -> race event info.

finding ways to tie the two sites together (forums & blog) was kind of fun. i reused abunch of stuff from the sidebar in my ubb on the blog sidebar. plus i have a scheduled task to grab the blog's feed every half hour and automagically show a lil "blog last updated" block with most recent datetimestamp on the my ubb sidebar. all this is just KISS integration, but i'm stewing up a couple of ideas for a custom mod that would do much fancier tricks.

You know, i WAS going to setup my server to have PHP4 run as a fastcgi module for compatability with older scripts; but I figured that i'd be safe just saying screw it...

I only had one compatability issue, but that got cleared up in about 20 minutes lol

this is the closest i've gotten: blog sample

i've had my blog integrated with my forums for... bout 6 years now. its not perfect, and doesn't have all the functionality of traditional blogs (comments, for example), but its really come closer through the past few years.

i've tweaked the news article mod, the IIP sidebar mod, through in some content islands (some, manually updated), and a few other goodies.

i'd love to continue moving it towards more traditional bloggy features and attributes. for example, right now, i have the "blog" divided by monthly threads. that means on day 1 of the new month, events from the previous day / week are instantly "archived", which often splits the flow of thought/conversation.

but... this is just about as far as i can go on limited brain power smile

i'm a wordpress fan and especially likin the _mu (multi user) version hey have (all free too ! )

if i had to integrate a blog into a forum, where selected user groups have their own blog, i'd go with WP..

i believe harvard uses it for their students.. ie: student.harvard.com or whatever..

so the integration with my forum would be username.sirdude.com or could also be sirdude.com/blogs/username i guess.

the key would be to share the DB's and as much of the styling as possible..

Posted By: Gizmo Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 08/31/2007 1:51 AM
I really wanted to use MU, but I can't... They FORCE you to not use www urls; and with how I like how I have things setup I need them; I tried to weed them out through their coding, and i b0ged something...

:sigh:
Posted By: sirdude Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 08/31/2007 8:58 AM
well... i consider that a challenge laugh

/me peeks under the MU code's hood smile
Posted By: Gizmo Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 08/31/2007 10:11 AM
Yeh, I challange you!

I want to be able to set my url as:
http://www.undergroundnews.com/blogs/

And have it so members blogs are contained within, such as:
http://www.undergroundnews.com/blogs/gizmo/

get me conformity, and I'll love you :nods:...

they USED to just have it so the .htaccess file would redirect you to "non-www" urls, but they found out that users where "easily" defeating it, so they integrated it into the installer several ways as well as numerous areas throughout the script...

The problem here is, I force my users to use www urls; so when i hit these "nonwww" urls, they get redirected to the www, which redirects back... so problems arise where it times out lol...
Posted By: Gizmo Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 08/31/2007 10:13 AM
BTW, I totally agree with "approving" and "recommending" standards; but forcing them down your users throat is crazy...

I've heard of many reasons many people use "www", and a main one being when univ's or org's use www for their internet and non-www for their intranet...
Posted By: AllenAyres Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 08/31/2007 5:24 PM
MT has had a multi-user feature for years smile
Posted By: sirdude Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 08/31/2007 5:37 PM
Allen true... there was always something about MT that i didn't like and i guess it's because i was finnicky ?

But when i was in my 'read 100 blogs a day' mode, i saw a noticeable trend where users were moving away from MT to WP...

It could just be that i wasn't giving MT a fighting chance though..

Posted By: AllenAyres Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 08/31/2007 8:30 PM
The reason a lot moved from MT to Wp was that MT changed their licensing a while back (v3?) and began charging for the product - this created an uproar (the NERVE someone would want to make a living at what they're good at and had been giving away for years smash ). MT backed down and still offer it for free for non-commercial use, but a good number had already left by then...

Plus, it's still mostly perl, which isn't seen as cOoL by those who wanted php and now want ruby tipsy
Posted By: sirdude Re: Blogs, love em or hate em? - 08/31/2007 8:43 PM
cOoL <-- Allen, you are soooo web 2.0 with that laugh

thanks for the info.. that makes sense!
