We used to have avatars, although they were reserved for our Contest Winners, Runners-Up, Entrants and Staff Members.
We also have a special icon for those who participate on Team UBBDev - our United Devices anti-cancer project team.

I like avatars because I get to see a little more of the personality of each person from the avatar they choose, especially if they use a picture of themselves.

Avatars are usually a personality reflection where sig images are usually an advertisment. Just what I've observed.
