There was a major error/omission in the documentation for v1.2 of the hack. It basically was missing a character in the instructions for about 8-10 template files. That single character was enough to cause the errors you received.
Really, the best way to fix the problem is to upgrade to UBB 6.03 and use v1.3 of the hack. It's fixed. I used my own instruction sheet and tested it out three or four different times to make sure it worked.
If you absolutely must remain on 6.02, try downloading v1.3 of the hack. You may have to use a little common sense and do some of the finding/replacing without the aid of the auto-finders, as there were several template changes between 6.02 and 6.03. But it is probably still the best way to do it.
