Sure you could... as long as the stuff you put on the sidebar is transparent too, it won't harm the sidebar at all
Even better, you could set the sidebar image as the background of the cell, and put the design as another transparent image inside the cell itself, which would mean you'd only have to change the filename of the design to change the whole sidebar
