Markups being something of my speciality I feel I must give you the answer to this one. =]

All line numbers should be from a clean 6.0.1 install, but might differ somewhat. As always, remember to make a backup of all your files before doing any changes. Report any problems you have and I'll try to fix them as soon as possible.

Step 1
Find these lines (should be at line 81) in sendprivate.php:

// Give them a form to fill out so they can send a private message
   $html -> send_header("{$ubbt_lang['PRIV_HEAD']} $User",$Cat,0,$user);

And add this line before it:

   $instant_ubbcode = $html -> instant_ubbcode();

Step 2
Now you will have to do some changes to your sendprivate.tmpl file.
Find this line (at line 18):

<form method="post" action="{$config['phpurl']}/sendmessage.php">

And change it to this:

code:
<form name="replier" method="post" action="{$config['phpurl']}/sendmessage.php">

Find this line (at line 66):

code:
<textarea cols="$TextCols" rows="$TextRows" class="formboxes" name="Message">$RawBody</textarea>

And change it to this:

<textarea cols="$TextCols" rows="$TextRows" class="formboxes" name="Body" onkeyup="storeCaret(this);" onclick="storeCaret(this);">$RawBody</textarea>
$instant_ubbcode

Step 3
In sendmessage.tmpl at line 18 you will find this line:

<form method="post" action="{$config['phpurl']}/sendmessage.php">

Which you will need to change into this:

<form name="replier" method="post" action="{$config['phpurl']}/sendmessage.php">

Then find this line (at line 42):

code:
<input type="hidden" name="Message" value="$FormBody" />

And change it into this:

code:
<input type="hidden" name="Body" value="$FormBody" />

And this line at line 108:

code:
<textarea cols="$TextCols" rows="$TextRows" class="formboxes" name="Message">$RawBody</textarea>

Should be changed into this:

<textarea cols="$TextCols" rows="$TextRows" class="formboxes" name="Body" onkeyup="storeCaret(this);" onclick="storeCaret(this);">$RawBody</textarea>
$instant_ubbcode

Step 4
Next is an important step, you will also have to change in sendmessage.php or you won't be able to send the message.

Change this line (at 39):

   $RawBody    = $Message;

To this:

code:
   $RawBody    = $Body;
   $Message    = $Body;

Step 5
Open up the template file mess_handler.tmpl and change the things mentioned below:

Find this line at line 18:

code:
<form method="post" action="{$config['phpurl']}/mess_reply.php">

And change it into this:

code:
<form name="replier" method="post" action="{$config['phpurl']}/mess_reply.php">

The find this line (at line 33):

code:
<textarea name="Message" cols="$TextCols" rows="$TextRows" wrap="soft" class="formboxes"></textarea>

And change into this:

<textarea name="Body" cols="$TextCols" rows="$TextRows" wrap="soft" class="formboxes" onkeyup="storeCaret(this);" onclick="storeCaret(this);"></textarea>

Step 6
Open the mess_handler.php file and change the following:

Right before this line (at 111):

      include("$thispath/templates/$tempstyle/mess_handler.tmpl");

Add this line:

      $instant_ubbcode = $html -> instant_ubbcode();

Step 7
Open mess_reply.php and do the following:

Find this line (at 43):

code:
   $RawBody = $Message;

---

And change it into this:

code:
   $RawBody = $Body;
   $Message = $Body;

The find these lines (at 32):

code:
      $html -> send_header("{$ubbt_lang['REPLY_PREV']} $Sendto",$Cat,0,$user);
      include("$thispath/templates/$tempstyle/mess_reply.tmpl");
      $html -> send_footer();

And add this right before:

      $instant_ubbcode = $html -> instant_ubbcode();

Step 8
Open the template mess_reply.tmpl and do the following:

Locate this line (at 42):

<input type="hidden" name = "Message" value="$FormMessage" />

And change it into this:

<input type="hidden" name = "Body" value="$FormMessage" />

Locate this line (at 58):

code:
<form method = "post" action = "{$config['phpurl']}/mess_reply.php">

And replace it with this:

<form name="replier" method="post" action = "{$config['phpurl']}/mess_reply.php">

Then find this line (at 84):

<textarea name = "Message" cols="$TextCols" rows="$TextRows" wrap="soft" class="formboxes">$RawBody</textarea>

And replace it with this:

<textarea name="Body" cols="$TextCols" rows="$TextRows" wrap="soft" class="formboxes" class="formboxes" onkeyup="storeCaret(this);" onclick="storeCaret(this);">$RawBody</textarea>
