The advantages of this reply method are kind of nice. Say you have a 20 reply thread, and you want to kind of reply to someone in the middle more directly. If you click the reply button for that post, it automatically puts the "RE: reply topic here... and then a Re: username"
So at a glance you can see who you were directly responding to.
