Hello. I want to use a cookie option when banning someone. The script should look up if his banned and then insert a cookie to the banned persons computer.
And on the posting section, the script should look for this cookie and prevent from posting if the cookie exists.

To where should I insert this scripts?

Thanks.

Assuming you're talking about the UBB, wouldn't it be easier just to use the control panel to ban the person by IP address or email, or if he's a member, turn off his posting privileges?

If you still want to use cookies, there are two places in postings.cgi where the IP address is checked to see if it's banned, one for posting new topics and one for posting replies (look for IPbanlist). Those would probably be good places to check the cookie. I'm not sure about how you would go about setting the cookie.

Yes this is much easier but what if he uses dial-up connection. He gets different IP everytime. And he can use different emails and register again. Cookie would be useful here.

All you need to do is create a cookie on his computer when he is banned, and then when he visits the site, you check to see if the cookie exists...remember users can delete their own cookies so cookie banning is no more helpful than IP banning.

But the UBB has already taken care of that. In the ban IP window. Just type in the first 3 sets of numbers. That will take care of his Dynamic IP address. But it would suck for another user that had the same ISP or something [Linked Image]

It is not dificult to spoof your IP, therefore, IP banning is useless as well.

Proxies are such great things, there is no real way to ban someone, but you can slow them down....
