Actually, the Perl language is faster than PHP, however...
Perl runs as a CGI application. Therefore, the Perl interpreter is created and destroyed for each script called. This slows down response time and uses somewhat more resources. PHP is (on 99% of servers) loaded as a server module, whether it be ISAPI or apache module, it runs in conjunction with the server. Therefore, this speeds up the process greatly, as the PHP/Zend interpreter only has to be loaded at the server startup.

I'm guessing you don't know what you're talking about? PHP is not on 99% of servers. It's close to about 40% now i believe. Perl is just as capable of running as an apache mod or ISAPI as PHP is. In fact, in the last netcraft survey, mod_perl (the apache mod version of perl) was found on more servers than PHP was. PHP also runs in CGI mode by default on windows. Please get your facts straight. Just a thought

I love PHP I used to think CGI was better too. My forums used to be ubb6, as a matter of fact i entered them into the spotlight contest this month and before i used to get tons of these retarded "CGI timeouts" but now i've switched to a new server and am running phpBB and i like it much much better than UBB. It runs much smoother than ubb and it loads quicker too. I even made my entire webpage out of php and its awesome Check it out: http://www.serialkillaz.f2s.com My only use now for the Infopop Member's area is to check out the hacks and updates and hopefully translate features to php [ May 17, 2001 07:54 AM: Message edited by: psychopathic ]

I meant that PHP was loaded as a server module/ISAPI on 99% of servers that have PHP. Sorry for the confusion . Also, you might want to check at: http://www.securityspace.com/s_survey/data/man.200104/apachemods.html That says i'm right and you're wrong . [ May 18, 2001 05:45 PM: Message edited by: bk111 ]

That link you gave only shows that PHP is installed as an apache module more than perl is.

Still not true i'm afraid. PHP ISAPI on windows is still 'experimental' and 'should not be used in a production environment'. Just a thought
