Perhaps he wants to get better Google ranking, without changing your content since it's invisible? (one of the ways which Google uses to rank sites is the number of times the page is linked, and from which pages)

yes, and link relevancy helps as well... tho if someone were to check his site it'd probably get delisted for trying to manipulate the results
