Ok I want a sponsor ad on the right side of my forum above the New topic button. I modified the Forum template header to include the code. I tried aligning it with tags, that just creates a big space at the top with just the graphic on the right. Tried right aligning it with a table and it put it where I want it, but the new topic button is ontop of it! How can I do it the right way?

I believe most sponsor ads are done with layers or iframes, which is probably why it looks funny when you put it in a table.
You may want to put the ad in the table with the logo, like you had in the second example, and then play around with the placement of the new topic buttons and that list of links... maybe try giving them a separate table cell under that or something...
Just for kicks and giggles, can you post the code for your ad banner? I can see what I can come up with by sticking it into a template myself...

Putting both graphics in a table sounds like a good idea. I don't know why I'm so worried about it though, my ubb gets like 5 hits a day and my sponsor only pays a percentage of sales. Anyway heres the code if you want to mess around:
