There is no Variables "directory." The variable files from the .zip go into your /cgi-bin folder, not a folder itself.

huh? i want to install this avatar hack, but it say i gotta upload a file into the variables something. so. are you saying i gotta create one? or wait. do you mean when it say upload this into variables directory , it mean in the cgi-bin?

if that's true then what' the difference between ubbcgi and variables?
IE:
*avatar_control.pl
(ubb cgi directory)
(CHMOD 755 - R/X permissions)
vars_avatar.cgi
(variables directory)
(CHMOD 777 - R/W/X permissions)

Hmm, I think .pl files go into your Templates directory, and vars_avatar.cgi goes into your main /cgi-bin directory. And I think that also means that you should CHMOD those files to 755.

When you first set up your ubb, you were asked to provide the absolute paths to a few directories, one of them being the variable files directory.
Chances are, you set this the same as your cgi-bin directory. Just look for files that begin with "vars" and that's the directory.
