Alright, I am trying to modify the public_topic_page.pl to include an extra variable which is $user_profile[20]. I added an extra registration field that says "Avatar URL" (the data ends up in row 20 of the member CGI file)

Now, when the user is signing up they can choose to put in an avatar or not put one in. If they do not put one in I want to automatically have perl put in a generic image. I have tried putting the following code into public_topic_page.pl but it does not work at all.
Down in my HTML section i have
If the user does put in a URL for their avatar then $user_profile[20] should remain un-modified but if they do NOT put in a url then i want $user_profile[20] to equal $vars_config{NonCGIURL}/avatar-generic.gif which will then bring up a Generic Avatar image.

I would deeply appreciate ANY and ALL assistance !
