The ones here (which seem to be based off Infopop's new CP) make every page have a 3 or 4 second lockup on my computer running IE 5.5. There are other pages that use menus with similar design (Microsoft.com comes to mind) that don't cause this "hickup".

Of course, those are only supported by IE. smile

Well, a script could be used to make IE load the quicker menus, or another script could be used. There are probably other scripts out there that accomplish the same thing. It's just really annoying. I'm sure I'm not the only one that would appreciate this.

These drop down menus were developed long before ubb 6 contained drop down menus... which is part of the problem. I have no problem with these menus and IE 5.5 or NS4, but they do not work at all in NS 6. What OS are you running on and what is your connection speed?

We are working on another solution presently, but to have true cross-browser compatible dhtml menus will involve some additional downloading until the files are cached in your browser. Bugs are being worked out now, we'll be ready by the time v6 is outta beta... if not sooner.

LOL...on a T1 you shouldn't have any problems, but I understand you T1 surfers can get a little worried when a page lags for a millisecond or two. The menus are fine on a dial up, 56k, and I am also running IE 5.5 and Windows 2000.

DO NOT change them Allen. tipsy

It doesn't have to do with bandwidth, it's something in the code, it locks up my browser for about 5 seconds. There's a difference between something downloading and something being rendered by the CPU (which is an AMD k6-380). But a java script shouldn't require that much CPU.

Also, using an AMD T-Bird 800 with IE5 and Win2k on a cable modem, I notice no lockup. This would tend to support that the code requires a large spirt of CPU power.

Sorry, that should have been fairly obvious from the start. I should have stated that but, I am pretty sure, if you get a problem with this site, then you must on many others. These dHTML menus are becoming very popular with the UBB6.

Do you have any URLs, Mike, where the locking up does not happen?

I will check this out at college later as they are only on P3 550.

Any site other than UBB Dev or the UBB6 Control Panel. I know I've seen similar drop down menu concepts like at www.ati.com (but they've redone their site) that don't cause any problems, that's why I say there should be a less CPU intensive code that would accomplish the same effect. I can't think of any actual pages that have this type of menu, but to test things out I went to ZDnet's web development section at www.devhead.com and browsed through their javascript drop down menus of various designs, none of them caused a lock-up. So it may be my CPU, but considering that lots of people don't have 5-600+ mhz computers, the code should be better written to not cause a lockup.

Win 2k Pro, IE 5.5: fine
Win 2k Pro, NS 4.7: fine
Win 2k Pro, NS 6.0: no drop down (no errors) - my fault - the menu was installed pre NS6 release and i haven't touched it since
MacOS 8.5.1, IE 4.5: no drop down (js error) - this is a known bug - menus will never work for ie4.5, but the error can be stopped.
MacOS 8.5.1, IE 5.0: errors - detection script picks this up as a non DOM (it's IS DOM1)
MacOS 8.5.1, NS 4.7: fine
MacOS 8.5.1, NS 6.0: don't have it here for testing, but should be the same as NS 6.0 on Win2k

MikeM: Does your browser lock when loading this menu system: http://www.webreference.com/dhtml/column47/LoadMe.html

?

I've pointed Allen at it (as he referenced above)... Works in more browsers, etc.

Windows 98; V2; IE 5.5; P3 550; ISDN; not so fine. I get the lockup for a few seconds.

Mike: thanks.

Really guys, this should be compatiable with NS 6.

It's a newer version with support for NS6, tho the download is a good bit larger... and it doesn't have the nice graphics for the anchor links you developed cal... laugh

We are testing it on a test site... I am gonna run it through NS 4 and 6 tonight... if it doesn't break, I'll add it tomorrow night.

Good!

Weird thing running the Whister [XP] Beta. This is using IE 6: On the main ubbdev.com page, when you hover over the menu and the links drop down, instead of each box where different menu items are, just the words drop down with the black text and the gold back ground. The boxes aren't full length, just as long as each word. And it's only on the main page that this happens.

I don't expect this to be fixed by anyone in UBBDEV, this is just a useless comment I thought I'd throw at you guys since I'm running Whistler and IE 6 at the moment.

BTW, Whistler seems really stable and everything I am using works like a charm. With the exception of a slight bug in AIM that puts black boxes around all the icons that are on each IM window. Strange.

Scat, if you get a chance, check the navigation in the DB: https://www.ubbdev.com/db/cgi/Ultimate.cgi

It has the new scripts and seems to load faster for most people on the test site. The first time it has to download the appropriate script file, but should run faster after that.

Yes, I am slow.

Yes, it works much better, it still causes a momentary lockup, but it's only a second, if that. Looks about the same otherwise. Hope you get it on the rest of the site soon! smile

LOL! I read it the same way from the active topics list the first time around... I was like... what is this all about? laugh

---About them menus... maybe I was dreaming that day, I don't know, but it does lock up on me still, even that other link you posted, Allen... This thread took 2 minutes to load. Unfortunately I don't know what kind of info to give that might help figure it out. I've already mentioned I'm using Mac IE5, but other than that... frown Maybe it's not even the menus.

No probs @ IP.

I may just have to live w/ it, since most other people don't have this problem and it'd be hard to hunt down. frown

The scripts they are based on are still being worked on... I'll keep an eye on them to see if there are improvements. It is v4.04.

I have a small question to ask about the drop down menu, I checked the website and I find them not so pretty as on ubbdev,

Do you think Cal would mind sharing the modifications he did on the script with us ?

thanks

I have some questions about the dropdown menus also. I got them to work, and match my site, but they won't work if they aren't on the main page.

Please check my question that I posted earlier here: https://www.ubbdev.com/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=15&t=000215

My question is pretty specific, so perhaps this affects you as well.

Thanks in advance...
