UBBDEV Members,
I would like to remind all of you, that we are not here to break the ubb copyright agreement at all.
This includes, but not limited to, removed copyright or powered by notices, and a pirated ubb. Pirated ubb, meaning you did not buy it yourself, but downloaded it from an illegal site, not having a license and still using the UBB, or giving your files to someone.
We ask you all not to break the agreement, or we will report you to Infopop immediately.

Also note, please do not post pirated UBB topics here - report them to [email protected] or to me to be forwarded.

Thank You.

I couldn't possibly agree more... We work hard and pay for what we have... it is just proper and correct to have everyone else return the same.
I pay my dues and think it is well worth it. Everyone else should do the same. I for one agree- try to pirate something from me, I will turn you in... without a second thought.

I'm not sure who to notify but if you to http://pd64.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro&BypassCookie=true you will notice that they are hiding the copyright.

ya know, sometimes I wonder how sites hosted on places like hypermart that have 1 member and get know hits can possibly be legit. oh well.

hey, is there any way tospot a pirated ubb while jus cruising the net?

If infopop would agree to add a public data file (maintained & updated Only by themselves), we could write / modify many different scripts that could do the job of Lic verification. Shoot, the internet if full of text file verification scripts. If they truely want to stop the "Piracy" then they need to employ some sort of self governing system to allow ligit UBB Lic owners to help verify UBB's. It would be "Impossible" for Infopop to police this themselves, therefor; We need to "help" them if they are to succeed in the reduction / elimination of pirated UBB's. Thay already have the file / script, we use it all the time to get new downloads from their site.

The information displayed doesn't have to be extensive, something like:

Lic To -> Host Name: www.lala_land.com
Effective Date: xx/xx/xxxx
Exp Date: xx/xx/xxxx
Disposition: Current / Expired / In transition.

The UBB Lic agreement clearly states, that one must have a (Purchased !!) Lic copy for each board running. That makes verification easy. The hard part is "Finding" the pirated UBB's behind the maze of security systems and firewalls.

That's my 0.02 cents, for what it's worth.

So this sort of site http://beddingbox.com/ms/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro is not allowed because it removes the copyright info? (not mine by the way)

What sort of action do infopop take against these types of boards? Is it a stern email saying not to do it again or do they try to shut the site down?

That one is a freeware one, but it's still a license infringement to remove the copyright notices.

UBBDEV Members:

Please note that while we do not promote the use or creation of pirated software, we are not in the business of "witch hunting."

However, if you have an illegal UBB and you continue to post references to it here and enter our contests with it, then we will have to take actions because we do not want InfoPop coming down on us.

I'm going to adopt a saying from the military here to help explain my point:

"DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL."

Got it? Good.

I can not agree with you more MasterMind. I hate it when I have to pay for something and someone just steals it. That is wrong! I will be sure to report any suspecious boards to Brett Harris.

Oh we know ... see, UBBDEV has secret agents all over the world: in bars, in coffeehouses, in restuarants ... all watching every move the American public is making. You never know if your best friend or even your girlfriend/boyfriend is one of our own! So how do we know if its pirated? How do you know that it isn't?

But tell me, how do you really know? I can understand if they're giving it out or it's an FTP site, but how else can you know? (Besides missing copyrights...)

Ladies and Gents, another thing you need to be careful of is using copyrighted images for your sites. If you want to really be scared, forget horror flics, drop by any site about copyrights.

There is a lot of talent here, be safe and develop your own images. Don't take the easy road to look cool, and end up in a court battle you never wanted.
My two cents..

Also come to think of it, if Infopop shuts down a board and let's it drop there, they were being nice. They could really go for the gold if you catch my drift. Buy your license, or join a forum like this and be part of making it great!

Look at Napster.. something like a 5 billion dollar fine.. Hmmmmm how many lawns would you have to cut?

Yes, Yeechie, this is also piracy. You are only allowed one running copy of the UBB per license.

Finding ubb's is seasy. Type in Ultimate.cgi into a search engine.. You'll find a few right there.. Then it's just a matter of click and go...

Does anyone think they are really able to hide here online?

Gee, if we all gave away our investigative techniques, pirates would use that against us wink

If you really want guideline, e-mail Infopop and once they've confirmed you're a legit user, they can send you details on how to spot pirated/illegal UBBs.

I am going to say my thoughts.
I pay for my lic. and I run and maintain all my own servers it all cost money. At least in America every thing here worth having cost money. (in a material sence)
If I find a pirated UBB Im going to turn it in so looking at my name here if you have a pirated UBB dont talk to me because your just going to cause me unnessasary work in writing e mails and makeing phone calls.
There are enough substandard free boards out there if you want UBB you need to pay for it just like I do If I was a Moderater here this is where I would be saying Topic Closed.........
Sorry If Im to the point but someone else taking something for free that I pay for is a insult to me and any other webmaster paying for there Ubb.
