Hi, if there is a better place to post this, please let me know. I apologize in advance if I'm wasting your time.

I need to make a backup of my UBB v.5.45a for the first time and have a couple of questions. When downloading all of my UBB files/directories to my hard drive, using CuteFTP, I need to transfer some files (cgi, etc.) in ASCII mode. So I choose the "transfer in ASCII mode." The problem is that some of the files in (.gif, .html, etc.) don't need to be downloaded in ASCII mode but should be transferred in binary mode, correct? But the problem is that CuteFTP doesn't give me the option of only downloading SOME files in ASCII and others in binary mode.

Here's my main question:
So, will it hurt to just transfer (download) everything in ASCII mode, including images and other files?

Also, can someone recommend a good FTP program that will give me more control over how files are transferred, so that I could specify that I want all .cgi files transferred in ASCII and all .gif files transferred in binary mode? Apparently in this respect, CuteFTP ain't so cute after all.

And finally, can someone point me to a good "backup UBB v.5 tutorial" that exists on the web somewhere? By the way, I may be transferring my ubb to a new server soon, and would also appreciate a good tutorial for moving a ubb v.5.45a.

Thank you in advance!

it sould be ok to download all the files in that mode, i just did with my 6.05, anyway about backing up just make a folder on your HD and download the files the same way they are ont he server (dirs and everything) then all ull have to do is re upload the dirs ect smile

when movein to a new server (ive only done this on ubb 6 so it may be diff for 5.45) u just re upload your files. once ont he new server do everything as u did in the frist install of ubb (setting the paths ect.)

I use LeapFTP. You can assign any extesions you want (.cgi .pl etc.) to be transferred in ASCII. I can do block CHMOD functions as well. There are several other programs out there, so look around. LeapFTP works for me.

As for downloading...I have a "mirror" of all the UBB boards I maintain on my local drives. I even go one step further and have a backup to that. You can then do all the work you like and know you have a full back up and not worry too much about messing up!! smile

There used to be a page dedicated to moving a UBB here: http://www.ultimatebb.com/help/transfer.html

EDIT--- I guess the great and powerful Info**** has once again left us hanging! I have moved three boards to new servers...it isn't too hard. I even did one via dial-up connection!! LOL

If you have crontab on your server, you can setup tar to automatically backup your entire site keeping permissions and directory structure intact. You can schedule it to go at anytime. Then you can just download the tar file, or setup another crontab event to email the file to you. I have found this to be the best AND AUTOMATIC method of backing up a site.

Thank you all for the extremely helpful info. I'm going to check out LeapFTP. In the meantime, I just downloaded everything in ASCII which will probably do the job if I should need to restore anything.

A thousand thanks!
