I am running ubb 6.05 on a dedicated server.
I would like to know if I could install a second instance of UBB on this server (into different folders of course) but keep my paths to the membership files the same. In effect operating two independent ubb's using the same membership files.
I am confident I can install everything to make it work. My question is: Would this cause any unexpected problems I should be aware of before I attempt this?
Any help/comments on this would be greatly appreciated!

You'd better be sure you own a second license first, or else there will be some problems.

As Matt pointed out, the situation you described WILL require a 2nd UBB license.
In addition, there is no problem in running two UBB's on the same server. The only problem you may encounter is if you share the Member directory (as you stated you would be doing). What can happen is a mess up of Moderators and Administrators. An Admin on one board WILL BE an admin on the other, and the same goes for the Moderators. If you plan on having different admins and mods then you'll need to have separate Member directories too.

i want to do the same thing - run 2 boards on one server. i do plan to purchase another license if i can run two boards without problems with memberfiles. i'm not concerned about the admin/mods.
what i am wondering though is what would happen with the member post histories? like would it throw off the search by user? sorry, but i'm not sure how to ask this question so that it would make more sense...
maybe if i explain it like this.... the files in the user_posts folder (in members folder) display history like so:
1|000001|000000 1|000001|000002
the above being: forum|topicnumber|replynumber
so, how do i define which board the forum/topic is on? man, i hope someone can make sense of this to help me out.
i notice that here at ubbdev, you folks use another board for your Database? if so, how are you resolving this members issue?
if anyone can offer any help i'd really appreciate it.

The forum numbers in the post history and the private forum permissions in their profile will intermingle. Solution: Use a different set of forum numbers.

You can either add (then delete) a whole bunch of forums, or manually play with vars_forums.
