When a new member tried to sign up this after noon he got this msg..
"FYI Can not overwrite an existing profile number. Please notify the administration that their last_number.cgi file may be corrupt. Permissions on the Members directory must be reset, and the Member Stat files must be rebuilt afterwards. (00000797)"
Do we need to shut board down to do this?

will most likely keep it from happening again...
rebuilding member stats rebuilds that file that it's trying to increase the number on...
in the mean time, make sure the number in the last_number.cgi file matches the member number of the last person to register, ie: 00000797

OK .. Thanks alot.. We deleted last member then rebuilt the stats. signed up a new member.. That worked then when we added another member that same # ie 00000797 came up (so like you said its stuck on that number)..
I will check it in the Am
Thanks again Allen & charles

the last file # is 00000797 has zero bytes in it the last file # of the last member is 00000796 and it matches his member # shown on the forum and in the control panel..
Is that why its stuck on #00000797 and wont go farther(because it has no data in it) What would happen if we deleted the #00000797 file since it is really no one(deleted thru the ftp server)?

I just had someone tell me that they have the same exact problem with my board (and yes, I upgraded ). Question before I rebuild -- what exactly does this mean? quote: Permissions on the Members directory must be reset
I went in and checked the permissions of the .cgi files in the Members file, and they all read 777. Is that right?
Thanks!

ADWOFF, make sure the actual folder that you've designated as your members folder is 777. The member files need to be the same, as well. Delw, on a *nix server, file permissions control who has access to what, and specifically, what these people can do to the files. I took this explanation from my WS_FTP Pro help file. quote:
Permissions can also be expressed as three- or four-digit values; for example, 1644.
The first digit is interpreted as follows:
If the first digit is 1 (known in UNIX circles as the "Sticky bit"), it sets the link permission to directories or sets the "save-text" attribute for a file.
If the first digit is 2, it sets the group ID on execution.
If the first digit is 4, it sets the user ID on execution.
The second digit expresses Owner permissions; the third, Group permissions; the fourth, Other.
Three- and four-digit values are used in the WS_FTP Pro log, in the message area, and by some system administrators and ISPs.
In the directory list, the first position indicates whether the item is a file (-, s, S, or t) or directory (d), while positions two through ten show the permissions for Owner, Group, and Other.
If you attempt to change permissions, check the message area or the log to see if you were successful.

Thanks Matt... Can you recommend someplace to dload docs, help section etc... the reason I am asking cause I have a million questions and could bury this board. Most of the posters seem to know alot more than just the basics.. I would like to learn the basics. At least if i had something to read befor posting a question it would make more sence to me..
