I am using certian forums on my site as news forums, so I want to have them in a reverse alpha order since I am using the date in the topic. Example:
quote:

2002/01/13: This is a Test News Headline

The only problem is that if I choose alphabetically, the top post is the first news post I entered (oldest). I would like the top one to be the most recent posted one (reverse alpha).

Is there a way to set this for only this forum? I do not want reverse for all forums as I have some other forums that use the correct alpha listings.

If there isn't a way to do it without a hack, can someone tell me what to do? I have never hacked before and know I will screw it up.

Thanks.

If you want it to be in "newest to oldest" format, why don't you use date sorting on the forum?

Sorry for the delay ...

The only date sorting I can find is to use the "Reverse Posting Order?", which doesn't fix it (that is site wide) or the "Sort By Date" or "Sort Alphabetically" option per forum. But, the sort by date sorts by last post time. I allow people to reply to the news, so if someone replies to a news story from a year ago, it brings that topic to the top, which is not what I want. I want the order to be the topic post time / date from most recent to latest.

Doesn't UBBDev do that? Is that a mod?

BTW, I use UBB 6.1.0.4

We sort by date in that forum and use the UBBNews mod to sync the posts with the front page. But if you look in the Announcements forum, there's a January post below a December post. It's all about the last post date.

Ok, so right now there isn't a way to do that in the forum listing. Is there any mod to do that individually per forum?

The way I have done the posts is date first, then news story. So, a topic would look like this:

01/20/2002: This Is A News Story

If I set it in alpha format, it does what I want, but backwards. For example:

01/16/2002: This Is A News Story 1
01/17/2002: This Is A News Story 2
01/18/2002: This Is A News Story 3
01/19/2002: This Is A News Story 4
01/20/2002: This Is A News Story 5

I would like it in reverse alpha format for that particular forum, like this:

01/20/2002: This Is A News Story 5
01/19/2002: This Is A News Story 4
01/18/2002: This Is A News Story 3
01/17/2002: This Is A News Story 2
01/16/2002: This Is A News Story 1

That way the most recent is always at top. Currently, so I don't have the most recent news on the bottom and maybe down a few pages, I have to keep it ordered by most recent reply, which then does jumble up the dates (ie: someone can post a reply to a story from 2001 and it would show on top).

Anyone got a mod for this, or know how to reverse alpha thread a particular forum?

in ubb_forum.cgi, find:
Code
[/code]

replace with:

[code]

this should make all alphabetically sorted forums be sorted reverse alphabetically.

jordo -

Is there a way to only specify certian forums for that? Basically, I have a news forum I want in reverse alpha, but a video game database index I want threaded in normal alpha.

Thanks again.

Code
[/code]

with:

replacing the 5 with the number of the forum you want reverse alpha sorted.

I copied the exact code you gave me, except changed the forum number. It didn't work. In fact, it changed everything to alpha format, even the ones that were listed by date. Thank god for back-ups! I was able to rebuild the forums and they all went back to normal.

Does this have to do with the code for the forums that are sorted by date normally? Here is the complete line of code I see in that area:

[code][/code]

For clarification, this is what I want:

1) Some forums to be arranged by date of last post in decending order (part of the original program)

2) Some forums to be arranged alphabetically in decending order (part of the original program)

3) Some forums to be arranged by date of last TOPIC posted in decending order (no matter when the replies are made), or in a reverse alphabetical order via topic title

There are multiple forums per situation wanted.

Thanks again for the help.

It looked all screwed up. ... I am not a genious on this stuff, so I probably screwed it up.

I replaced only what you said, so it looked like this:

[code][/code]

yeah you replaced the wrong one... it should end up looking like this:

[code][/code]

replace the 5, 6, and 7 with the numbers of the forums you want, and if you want more than that sorted reverse alpha then follow that pattern to add more.
