what version are you running now? are you upgrading from a 5.x board, or a 6.x board?

This sounds like 6.04d not 5.04d
No one can be running a UBB that old (except for some).

I want to do a fresh install of 6.04d while keeping my threads and members data. Does anyone know where I can find literature on how to do that. If you can help me out I would be very appreciative.

If you have a 5.xx board you have to run the upgrade.cgi file that is included in the UBB6 distribution zip to convert the member and thread data. There are upgrade instructions provided in the UBB6 distribution zip on how to perform the upgrade.

what if the upgrade failed and now I am trying to upgrade again? How to do it? I tried to run upgrade.cgi again, but it said that nothing can be upgraded, the work had been done.

well do you have a backup of your old ubb you could re-upload on the website ?
you could then just follow the steps one by one as described in the UBB's upgrade file.
