So we're switching servers yet again, and everything is peachy, but the DNS information is taking a while to propagate. Can I install and configure my board using my IP address as the absolute URL and then simply change the absolute paths either through CP or through editing vars_config.cgi or will that cause major breakage? *sheepish grin*

You can safely set it up now using the IP, then just change the URL later in the control panel. No vars_config twiddling needed. Be sure to follow the official move instructions to the letter...
