I've got an ad script which I want to put up (ported to Perl for convenience - so it can provide a variable containing the ad code).
My question is how can I set this up so that I can use $adcode from my templates, but not break the cache?
UBB.classic 6.3.0, so pretty old.

Look to a client-side solution instead. iframes or Javascript document.write()s that call the script, for instance. Ads could be put on static pages (without SSI) using that method as well.

So there's no way to capture one state and cache it, then use that?
I'll look at other methods, just would prefer to keep it using the same basic method over the site
[EDIT]And I've just remembered that the file itself is in a .htaccess protected dir...[/EDIT]

It's more a matter of minimal effort than anything. You could hijack the cache recall bits to filter in the ads, but that would require quite a bit of custom coding. Avoiding the entire mess altogether makes much more sense, and avoids yet another code hack...
