i have not added any mods as such,
more editted the html output
my brief is to make the code validate and more resemble the rest of our site e.g.

you are correct Alan i reverted to an earlier version of ubb_lib_posting.cgi and all is well
I was tryimg to add height and width attributes to the img src="graemlins"
this was working fine except if post was edited.
the edit window displayed the html code (.img etc) instead of colon smiley.
is there some function that converts the graemlins code back to the shorthand for the edit window?
