Heh, since posting this question I found the answer myself

Incase anybody is wondering, to get the gradient bar hack working with the newsfader, do the following.

in public_forum_summary.pl

thanks for the news that is already none by many but this will help all thos enewbies out there.

If you are looking for category gradient bars to change go to public_forum_page.pl and public_forum_summary.pl or public_topic_page.pl and look at the readme of the gradient hack and look at the very bottom message on the readme to no what to do. It is very easy.
