I think this would be a good hack and i dont think it would that hard. Like Vbulletin has you can go to your Profile and then click on send a private message. UBB doesnt have this. You have to have the person post then click the PM button. What if you dont have Memebr list installed and you want to send someone a PM but they havent posted yet. It would be impoosible. But is there a way wher eyou can type in someones Name or board number and then send it that way. It would be really kool.

Uh, the UBB *DOES* have a PM link from the user's profile.

And IIRC, the memberslist hack also has a PM link....

Ya i no about this but is there a way where we can put this in the MY PRofile so where it says
SEND TO:
you can type who you want it sent to insteadof going to Memebr list and checking it out that way?
I think it it would a lot easier and kool. Also it would be kool if there was another way so instead of sending it there name you can send it to them by typing there Memebr number as well. I hop you know what i am talking about now hehe.

A simple hack would be to do a drop down list of users, of even an extended one, and you select the name.

one thing which has always kept my board uers from using the PM feature a lot is the fact it is hard to know if you have a new message, i know their are hacks about to show this, but nothing which has impressed me, one of the features lost when the PM became intergrated into the ubb.

On huge boards, the dropdown list might be too much--especially if it doesn't alphabetize the users.

It has been discussed here and in other forums the idea of having an audio indicator w/new PMs--like "You've got mail!"

I don't know how hard that would be, but it'd be cool if such a hack could be created!

that is the only liminitation, you could also have a new window open with a list of members, simular size to the window which opens to add a buddy, with a list of members.

Its a good idea, but i think (and problerly many will agree) having any sort of sounds opens in HTML is not wise, for people who have slow connections even if the sound is a small file, it would not be wise.

A best way is to open a new window, a simple one saying "You have n New Messages".

But we could do with a PM bar, like their was for the 5.x seriers, where you had a bar with a header and then the the cell below says what you have, you could even take the Idea off the VB where if yo have a new message you would have a flashing bar.

One problem i have had with the current PM hacks, is the fact it uses cookie's, and i find it inaccurate, it would be best to do a sub routen which got the codes rather than java script.

If their was a proper PM hack for the 6.2 seriers, the PM would become a main feature like it was, but their is none, and this is why so many people have a question about it.

Hey Andrew,

I like your ideas.

Since I don't allow e-mail addresses to be shown at my community (to help keep spammers from harvesting them), PMs are the first way most of my members have of contacting one another individually.

With my community growing daily, it'd be great to be able to have a PM alert system in place that would let everyone know when they have new PMs w/out receiving the e-mail notification.*

*I've had people respond to that e-mail (I've since modified the message to warn heavily against that!), but I also have people who cannot receive .html e-mails--which means their notification e-mail is a mess! eek (I like the .html e-mail so I can click right on the links instead of copying & pasting ... color me lazy wink ).
