They are starting to bug me now. I am usually unable to leave my comp on for more than four hours. This week, I have got two LRM (Long Running Molecules) and because I can't leave my comp on I have to keep getting rid of that WU and starting a new one. I always loose valiable points and It's making me so mad. Most of the people part of this team leave their comps on all day, but for me it's really hard to complete one long WU to get some valiable points. I hope they make that fix soon...

What exactly do you think is a long running molecule anyway?

In my experience over the past few months, it is not unusual for a single work unit to take an entire day to run. In fact the one that is running now on my laptop is at 36 hours.

More often than not a work unit will take more than 12 hours than less than 4 hours.

Your problem seems to do with not being able to leave the computer running, and losing valuable processing time.

Here are some tips you should consider.

1) Run UD Monitor: this will tell you how long it has been since your last save, as well as backup your jobs, so you can recover them if you crash or have to shut down

2) Let it run overnight: I find it hard to believe that someone needs to use the computer 24/7. Even so, the agent is pretty unobtrusive, and only uses whatever processing power that your computer can spare

3) Don't worry so much about how long a job takes. The longer the work unit, the more points you will earn. If your pc rates you 15 pts/hour, and you process only 4 hours, you will only get 60 points. If the same job runs for 24 hours, then you would get 360 points.

4) Try to find another computer to run it on. It does not have to be a state of the art P4 or Athon. If you have an older pc sitting around in a closet, attic, basement...wipe off the dust, plug it in and crunch some conformers. It might take a little longer to complete, but it will still do the job.

5) Have some patience, don't be in such a hurry, and brush your teeth before going to bed.

I know long projects get you lots of points but when it's stuck on a % and not saving it can be a hassle because your stuck if you can't leave the comp on longer than the molecule needs to finish. I know WU take a while to finish but when it's stuck on a % for longer than your on it's hard. In my experiance the long U I have had at least do one % in 4 hours and don't stay on the same molecule, so I can continue the next day without having to start again.

Anyway, I'll get the UD Monitor and try that. Leaving the comp on overnight is something I don't really want to do so we don't get high electricity bills, but I'll try it if I can..

The UDMon does make it easy to check when the last time the agent passed a % point. There is another way to do that without getting third party software, if you want.(nothing against UDMon, great prog)

Go to My Computer/C Drive(or whatever drive you have UD on)/Program files/United Devices
and check the time stamp on the file tkcp.ud

This will tell you the last time it saved.

Also, the other solution I have found is to only do RAS protiens. They never have LRMs. Open the agent up and end task on the UD_7***** task. Do this until you have a RAS.

I find the RAS protein boring to look at...the new one...Cycloxygenase-2 is much more interesting to look at.

I like the Superoxide Dismutase. I have one running right now that has 280 hits...they all seem to have a lot of hits with ole super dis!

I have got Cycloxygenase-2 a few times in a row now. Out of about 3, I got one LRM so they are in them. My favs are RAS because they don't have LRM and also Superoxide Dismutase because they get heaps of hits.

I have just had a work unit that was in 45% for more than 24 hours, then I restarted my computer and it was back to the beginning of this percent

I'm now starting a new work unit (closed the ud_#####.exe)

Well thats the only way if you don't want to wait another 24 hours to get back to where you were. I can't wait for the fix they are making so it saves the time as well as the %.

Not too much. You can get alot of points as long as they move on at some point..

While we are on the subject of LRMs, I got my first 6COX 41 hours 10 minutes ago. I am on derivitive 90 of 1%. At this rate I see it doing a just over 2 derivitives an hour. With the total derivitives in a work unit being 100x100 or 10,000, I should be done my first 6COX by June.

I hope it decides to move a little quicker soon.

Yeah, Long work units get you heaps of more points then gaining your points with short work units.

I just noticed if you use the Panic method. It still counts the hours you did up to that point! WOHOO!

It Does? So we get points for how much time we did even though we didn't finish the WU? Thats great!

As long as you do it thru task manager.

No...that's not great. Just let the thing run.

Don't throw out work units that you feel are too hard. Don't crash the program intentionally to interupt the process. Don't try to find ways to cheat the system. Don't do things that will lead to incomplete or corrupted results.

Just let it do its thing.

Yes, please. If at all possible, finish each W/U. The only reson I use it is because my computer cannot do it. I have a 95 box with a PII233 and 32MB of RAM. I usually crash after 24 hours on 1 molecule. I recently did a 50+ hour percentage point, but that is the exeption for me. If I crash twice on the same molecule, I realize I can't finish that one. I do have the ability to run 24/7 if it doesn't crash or freeze. I encourage as Tack said, finish if you can!

If you're using 95, then you don't have to press Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot, most other keys will do the same

Seriously though...it's not a bad idea to reboot your machine after you finish a large work unit.

I try to reboot just after I d/l each w/u to give it some extra umph of RAM. I also try to reboot after each really long % point. But I still try to not dump a unit unless it gives me major problems.

I only throw my WU's away if they run for longer than I leave my comp on. I'm usually unable to leave my comp on for long times so I have no other choice do I? I'm sorry about that.

if ya don't want LRMs, go ctrl+alt+del find the thing called "ud" with a bunch of numbers behind it, and end that task. it will go to the ud server and request for another molecule.

Yeah, that is what we are talking about. If you don't like them, but can finish them, then finish them. You should only use the C+A+D if you cannot possibly finish.

The cyclo-2 that I'm running now is 60+ hours and has been at 79% for a few hours. It had been stuck at 71% for about a day, but thank goodness cleared this morning. Hopefully it'll finish in another day or so, but it will probably be worth close to 1,000 points

I called home to have my brother see if my computers been running since i've been away visiting Japan,Hong Kong and Korea Since the 7th. So far amazingly both machines are still running, and 78 of 90 are done on both machines. The one that is running now on one of the machines is only 28% done and been at it for 107 hours ( GOOD LORD ) ... I cant wait to see the point that one gives lol

Woah, 107 hours on 28%? Thats one long work Unit!
