To give an update on the status of 5.0. Here is what has been completed so far:

1) One table for all posts. This stops the creation of dynamic tables.

2) Config option to allow users that aren't logged in to choose a username for their post. The username cannot be already taken by someone else, and their username will not be linked to a profile.

3) User titles for a certain amount of posts. Admin can set any amount of titles they want by editing a file. Once a user reaches a set number of posts they get a new title specified in that file. Admins can also change any user's title to something distinct, which would allow some special users to have special titles.

4) Added the ICQ status indicator to the "Who's Online" screen, if this is turned on in the config.

5) Admins and moderators now get a link directly from a user's profile to edit the user.

6) When viewing a user's profile, a link is displayed to show all posts made by that user (25 per page).

7) Added a new config and user option that allows you to set the number of posts to display when viewing a thread in flat mode. This is especially useful for very long threads.

That's it for now. There is much more to come. As usual check the changelog at http://www.wwwthreads.com/CHANGES to get more info on what is being worked on.

More new features added:

1) Slightly modified Steve Linberg's ([email protected]) patch to allow users to create their own passwords at signup. Added a config option in w3tvars.pm to turn this off or on.

2) Modified the "I forgot my password" function. Instead of changing the original password, it assigns a temporary password to the user. This allows the user to use the temporary password to get in and change the password if needed. It also allows the user to ignore the temporary password and continue to use the original password if they didn't request the temporary password.

3) Added a set of admin scripts to allow admins to delete users that have been inactive for a certain number of days.

4) Added a set of admin scripts to allow admins to delete private messages that are older than a certain number of days.

More things changed / added:

1) Modified the admin/moderator ability of editing users. Now special titles can be given to individual users in the edit user section.

2) Modified the showip variable. This allows you to set it so the IP address is only viewable by admins, admins and moderators, everybody or nobody.

3) Added the Username and Subject of the post you are replying to, to the "In Response to" section when you are replying to a post.

4) Admins and moderators of a board now have several more options when editing a post. From the edit post screen, they can choose to close or open the entire thread, or they can keep or unkeep the entire thread. This is still available in the admin section as well, but this adds a way to quickly manage threads while viewing them.

5) Fixed a format problem in netscape when viewing posts with headers on the side and in flat mode.

6) Added another admin/moderator option when editing a post. Now their is an option to move the thread to another forum.

7) Changed the seperator for the groups feature from a _ to a -. The _ character was causing some problems with different SQL servers.

8) Added a counter flag to the posts table. This tracks the number of times a thread has been read. This number is displayed with the parent post on the postlist page. It is also displayed in the board title bar when viewing individual posts.

9) Began work on an API. This will start with a minimal set of functions for things like adding users.
