What's the rationale behind limiting the time allowed for editing a post?
It seems a bad idea to me. For instance, suppose you post a hack. Then a couple of weeks go by, an upgrade comes out and you adjust the hack accordingly. You want to post the updated version and edit the original message to tell them to use the new upload instead. You're screwed - and so are the people who innocently come along and use an outdated hack.

Just for the forum here? I agree that unlimited time for editing might be better.

It's very useful to have this feature remain in the general release however.

Perhaps on a forum-by-forum basis?

Sorry what I was asking was that you only want the feature to be disabled for this web site not the w3t program as a whole.
But out of misunderstanding comes an interesting suggestion. []/w3timages/icons/smile.gif[/] On a forum-by-forum (ie. board-by-board) basis could be put to good use - I guess that would mean making it an admin setting rather than in w3tvars.

Actually, in general I do like the idea... After I read a post that's been posted a certain time ago, I then can assume that it won't change again. This closes a security loop hole, in my opinion, since a moderator can then rest assured that old posts won't be changed "behind his/her back", especially on forums that don't require moderator approval for posts. I noticed that if I edit any of my posts, it is usually in a matter of minutes. Also, if the limit has passed, one can always add an "update" post to the thread, e.g. for your problem with updating hacks.

I hadn't thought of that. In that case, you're right and, as you point out, one can always add an "update" post.

In the light of what Gerrit just said, I now do see the point and agree that a time limit IS a good idea.

Good job Gerrit. You did a much better job of explaining it than I would have[]/w3timages/icons/wink.gif[/].
