is it supposed to not log me in when i go to the main page? when i click the login link, it logs me in automatically. it is a little bit of a hassle, i am not lazy i can click on the login link, i am just wondering.

If you have a bookmark to the main page then on many browsers it will look as if you are not logged in. This is a browser/cache issue. If you refresh the main page then it will probably show you as being logged in.
