Hi everyone:

I am trying to compare W3T with vBulletin (OK .. pse dont groan!!) .. I use this forum and the vBulletin forum. What I dont know is which of the two forums has got more users ..BUT what I do know is that this forum (W3T) is QUICK .. very quick! (Maybe its a "tiny" forum .. thats why its quick .. after all vBulletin uses PHP3 whereas W3T only usese Perl! We all know that PHP3 is MUCH faster than Perl .. dont we??)

Can anyone give me an idea as to just how big this forum is .. without giving away "trade secrets"!

Put simply .. Is W3T faster than vBulletin??

Answers on a postcard to ............. (only joking)

EDIT:

Just gone back to vBulletin Forum .. this is what they say:-

Registered Members: 1264
3798 threads in total | 35631 posts in total

What are the "same" figures for W3T .. and why dont we see them?? (Good point??)

About 18,400 posts, 5772 registered users on this forum now.

Last I checked, the Sony Music BBS using W3T had over 1,000,000 posts and 150,000 registered users... no speed problems for me! []/w3timages/icons/smile.gif[/]

I picked W3T just for the reason of speed and the ability to handle a load of posts and lots of users.

vBulletin is quick... but not much quicker than this forum, if at all.

Asking here, did you really expect us to say anything good about... vBulletin? []/w3timages/icons/smile.gif[/]

BTW, the registered users are on the main index and you can easily display the total posts there as well...

The sony board is at http://bbs.sonymusic.com/wwwthreads.pl if you want to see for yourself. It uses a rather old version of W3T.

There has been one speed comparison that I know of:
http://www.glcomputers.com/wandrer/forums/
and it finds VB to be somewhat faster, but I wouldn't put all of my faith in a single test (results will depend on exactly how test is done, etc.). I think the most significant conclusion is that they both scale up pretty well (unlike UBB, a popular product that seems to choke under heavy use).

I did a lot of shopping before deciding to purchase W3T about a month ago and the main contenders were VB and W3T. VB seems like a decent product, but I went with W3T mainly for two reasons:
1) It has threading (VB didn't then, but it may have changed)
2) W3T seemed like a more mature product. VB hasn't been around all that long and it has some little quirks like passing unencrypted passwords in cookies which I didn't like (again, this may have changed since then).

Both products have demo versions which you can download to try out for free. Unfortunately, both demo versions are also not very representative of the commercial code. The demos are based on very old/debilitated code.

Yeah, and don't forget the [:red]Scream advantage that W3T has! Not to say other products don't have good support, but this is by far the best I have seen for a forum...

I also read somewhere that VBulletin makes a *huge* amount of calls to the database for *every* post.

The interesting point here is this .. I have posted a similar "cry" on the vBulletin forum & the response has not been anything like the response here?! (Good point for W3T)

The vBulletin "faction" claim PHP is a "better" choice than Perl .. much faster .. they also boast as having one of the busiest forums on the Web using vBulletin??

Hmm! I am still deciding!! But ..

this forum is good & its dynamic & alive! I like that.

Getting feedback from the forum's own community will always be biased[]/w3timages/icons/laugh.gif[/]. PHP and PERL both have their good points. I would suggest with whatever forum product you go with that you base your decision on if it has the features you like and by visiting other sites that are running the product. I could rattle off alot of reasons why to choose WWWThreads, but you will get that type of reply no matter where you go. Every forum has it's good points and benefits. It's a tough choice, I know.

vbulletin is fast but it is only good if you have a dedicated server. there is this one person right now who is having problems cause there server keeps crashing. because there is way to much load on mysql. php is good without a doubt. vb makes way to many calls to mysql i had 12 users and my host said that i had to switch boards. it makes 262 queries for the main page, 181 queries for a single forum and 206, that was taken from there forums. i don't know how many wwwthreads does, but i know it is not that many.

php is great, i loved the ability to be able to pull information easily from vbulletin and display it on my main page. like show the top 10 posters of all time. or show 5 dead posts on the main page. but i am slowly learning how to do stuff like that in cgi.

but wwwthreads is pretty old and is a well rounded bb program. and at this moment it is the most complete program out there. with many options that other bb programs wish that they had.
the community here is great, and the fact that many big corporations use wwwthreads helps to.

Well I use Vbulletin.
Their support is a disaster. No update to fix bugs for over 3 months. The developper never post on his board.

But it still has php...
The only reason why I don't switch to w3t (Scream is GREAT !) is that it still us this lame perl.

Comon people, ASP is the way to go on NT, PHP is the way to go on UNix, in particular with a database.

If I were scream, I would throw all my efforts to make a PHP version.

Benj,

What matters is results. WWWThreads works very well by any account. Selecting a solution based purely on implementation is like picking a programming language for a application task because it has a high cool factor, not based on the whole sum of requirements. Scream has said that he will be working on a PHP version, and the current perl version not only works very well, but is useable by quite a number of peolpe whose hosts don't have PHP available. Your solution is coming....

Those query figures for vBulletin seem somewhat unrealistic, I mean there really isn't a need for so many damn queries just to list a the forums, or even the threads.

last time i went, yesterday there was no problems. even though you can go to http://boards.imdb.com/boards/wwwthreads.pl and see it running.

there is a thread going on over at vbulletin.com right now with the same question. http://vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=3929

in the end, when people chooose which forum to go with, it is between php or perl. and that is where they make there decision.

Some time ago, when deciding which forum package to use myself, I went with wwwthreads. I guess there are a lot of very good packages out there but what made me go with this one (among other things already mentioned) was the community of users that we have here. I think something like that is very important (and sometimes can be overlooked..)

Needless to say, I am very pleased with my choice. Good luck.
