I ordered 2 of them, and they are both great. PHP 4 Bible (ISBN 0-7645-4716-X) and PHP Essentials (ISBN 0-7615-2729-X)

Professional PHP Programming by WROX is very good. Written by some of the guys who hang out at http://www.phpbuilder.comThe version of the book I have does not go into PHP4 much since it was written before the release, but 99% of the information is the same between the 2. I am not sure if they have released an updated version of the book yet. http://www.clickteam.com

For beginners? Definitely Teach Yourself PHP4 in 24 Hours by SAMS publishing. I've found it indispensible in getting the ground basics f the language and syntax. Beware tho, it has a couple errors, beng a new book and all. --------- Shalazar http://www.charisma-carpenter.com

I learned PHP without a book... by using the annotated manual online and a few example scripts. Then again, I'm []/w3timages/icons/crazy.gif[/] crazy. Administrator, Videogame Music Archive

You know Perl. Do you know C? If so then you pretty much know 90% of the language. www.zend.com/manual is the most up to date online manual on features. If you want just read the basics. Most books you buy out there are based on this site or are virtually exact copies.

Same here. At first I asked a couple of questions on IRC in #php, now I'm the one answering virtually any question. I have PHP running on several machines and I have been working with PHP since Beta 2.0

I don't like that manual. They don't update it often enough for me. www.zend.com/manual is update as to what's in the CVS repository. Zend is the company that makes PHP.

phpMyAdmin is like God to me. []/w3timages/icons/smile.gif[/] phpwizard.net (the guys that made phpMyAdmin) guys wrote a pretty good book together. I talk with them on IRC a lot.

I'm not a big fan of the PHP manual myself. I am a learner by example, and they just put the most cursory examples and explinations in there. However, the benefit of the online manual is the user comments board. I've found that helpful on more than one occasion. And in IRC, the PHP channel on #EFNET has been invaluable to me. --------- Shalazar http://www.charisma-carpenter.com

Since I'm a 'copy and paste' guy and like you, want lots and lots of working examples, I'll think I'll go with the one you like best. []/w3timages/icons/smile.gif[/] [] http://www.amdragon.com/images/eileensig.gif[/]
