Ok, here's your chance to speak up again[]/w3timages/icons/laugh.gif[/]. Been working on the admin upgrade for some time now with quite a few new features added, so I need to know what everyone wants. Should I keep adding more admin features and put off the release for another 3/4 weeks, or should I put out a release within the next week with what has been finished so far and get it all ported over to the PHP version?

So let me know what you think as I don't want to start coding any new features for the admin section if the majority would prefer an earlier release.

"Easier to track down fewer bugs, I say release now"

I say Ditto!

With one question?

Will this have "any" of the hacks added to it? Like spellchecker.net, notify moderators, login on main page, one click for icons or any of those great hacks that I've grown to really really like?

If not I think I'll pass on this one. Too much time is spent adding this stuff which I would have to do with a new version without them.....If you were to add these cool hacks THEN release I would say YES!!!!

From this point on, all future versions will concentrate on a certain area of the program. This one was the administration area. So, to answer your question, nope[]/w3timages/icons/wink.gif[/]. No hacks added in this release.

I say let's get the first admin release out now... then work on rolling in some of the hacks to the main area...

besides, the sooner we can convince Eileen to upgrade, the sooner she'll get working on upgrading her hacks! []/w3timages/icons/wink.gif[/]

I prefer a release now such that you'll port the same mods on the PHP version soonely. My reason is that as soon as the perl and the PHP versions are equivalent in features, I want to concentrate my time and energy to port all the hacks I have done for my very specific needs.

Yes yes yes. "Publish and be damned".
You know I'd go for a release every night, given half a chance. []/w3timages/icons/laugh.gif[/]

...and meanwhile the hacking of 5.0.9 continues...

I support earlier release...

But I still am down for now because there is a serious bug in 5.1.6 PHP that we need to get fixed asap so I can even USE the forums. We cant run the php forums until the bug is fixed!

(Yes, Im begging!!!! PLEEEEEAAAASSSEEE! hehehe)
(Its the posting bug in the php bugs area.)

Thanks so much scream, i know you are one busy dude, but this one bug is enough to not allow us to use the new php version at all! That makes me very SAD! hehee

There is *one* more thing I'd like to see before you leave the Admin stuff. That's to eliminate the editpost screen and jump straight to preview/modify. Pull all the Admin stuff off the editpost screen and get to it from a little 'Admin' button on the edit/reply bank on the post itself.

I can't second you. I can't see good reasons doing this way.
We do more administration and editing together than editing only.
You're suggestion imply a lot of code modifications that will make hard the implementation of some specific hacks.

I haven't made myself clear. What I propose would involve very little code modification and one less step for regular editing. I'm not talking about going to the Admin *menu*, I'm talking about going from this new admin button to the exact same editpost screen you go to now except maybe minus the "change this post" button and maybe renamed "managepost ".

Or perhaps people would rather have all this stuff tacked on the end of the regular edit screen?

Scream,

Did you decide what you're gonna do yet????

I'm so antsy for this upgrade I can't stand it!!!

I bet your access logs have been filled by me coming here to see if the new version is ready! []/w3timages/icons/crazy.gif[/]

I'll be releasing early it looks like[]/w3timages/icons/smile.gif[/]. I'm just trying to get a few final bugs worked out and then I'll put out a beta release for testing. Really need to get some feedback on the new admin stuff so I'll know if there needs to be more instructions or whatever before doing a final release of it.

on a side note, would it be possible for users to upload all the w3t files then go to admin.cgi or whatever and change everything from the admin screen. i personally don't care, but for the users who don't know much about perl/php this would be great. or maybe they just open up the folder where they installed w3t and the installer sets the paths to files, and from there you pop in your databse information and it installs all the needed info into the database? users would love that. i heard that the news linksql installs everything for you, i don't like that too much for upgrading. but for normal users who dont' know much, it would be easier for them to install wwwthreads.

I don't know if you continue to accept new wishes. Here's my last minute one:

I'd like to see different levels of moderators (=> new field in the moderators table). One idea, not necessarily the best, but it doesn't need a lot of code mofications, is to assign a weight/rank to each admin funtion (=> to each admin script in practice). Each funtion is accessible by the admin or a moderator with the same rank as this function.

Great news[]/w3timages/icons/smile.gif[/]. And if you also put out a PHP beta version, that will be a even greater news.[]/w3timages/icons/smile.gif[/][]/w3timages/icons/smile.gif[/][]/w3timages/icons/wink.gif[/]
