Just found out there's a version of macromedia's multiuser server out there for linux folks, as well as mac and windows. It has built-in support for MySQL also.
I think I just found my next project.

http://fuse.taivas.com/fuselight/(for those of you who aren't familiar, Shockwave has been (in my experience) one of the best opps for adding a chatroom onto W3T, since I avoid java at all costs. I'm running the plain-jane chat room on my site if you want to take a look. Shockwave is good because there's a player on all platforms, and up until now I thought their server was only available on windows and mac. Apparently someone has put together their own version of it under "free source" for Unix/Linux folk - here's the URL:

very low overhead (CPU & mem) and multiplatform and browser independent)
