Do you like pop-ups? I was trying to think of a multi-platformic (is that a word?) way of sticking some syntax help for search in there without clogging up the page.
Another option would be to put a tiny "Help" icon to the right or left of the search field. This way a user can click on it for the "pop-up" help or take them to the FAQ, directly to the instance of the "How to Search" anchor.
