I would like to include a poll that would be displayed on every page request (it's going to take a small hack of the main.inc.php). Is it even possible to include a post outside the context of a posted message?
Where does w3t parse and look for the |pollstart| tag?

Hmm, it would be possible but may be a bit tough. I actually do the poll markup parsing in addpost, so if you take a look at addpost.php you'll see where this is handled. It's done in 2 places. The first one is done for the Preview screen, so it's not the one you will want to look at. Go down to about line 539 to see the real one.
