I havent been very active here these last days... just wanted to let you all know that I am working on a new set of navigation icons, though I see that some have already been done. Anyway, that might be better, so you get to chose between different styles. []/testimages/icons/wink.gif[/] I am trying to do this in the same style of the rest I made. Maybe latter today I will have them done.
One thing, we still need a little extra space to the right of the other icons I made, right? Or has this been taken care of? Oh, and one more thing. I see there is no text right now with the navigation icions (just the ALT text), will it be this way or is it provissional? Dont have time to read through all the posts dealing with this so that I can work on the icons []/testimages/icons/wink.gif[/].
Basically i dont really like text inside icons since it makes language translation hard. I have made those icons that are now used for navigation (basically old icons but with transparent background and text removed). Idea is to have option for icons only or translated text with icons.

Well done - they are beautiful. I think the 'big' ones are a bit *too* big though. I'd prefer all the icons to be standardized on a height of 15 pixels,
Great job on the icons, MTO. Thought I'd throw an idea out at ya if you were still in the mood to mess with them.
You could include both the graphic and text inside the same space by giving the graphic a 50% (or so) opacity so the text which would be written through the graphic would show up better.
Hope that makes sense. Hard to verbalize. []/testimages/icons/laugh.gif[/]
>> Eileen: Well, the bigger ones (20x20) are done such size on purpose because I was thinking that they should stand out a little -just a little, not too much. Also, those 5 pixels gave me room to more freedom of design. And since there is no text aligned with them, the size wasnt really needing (in my point of view) to be so much the font height as the rest. The "Reply" and "Edit" are aligned with text, in a row with text, so they do need more like a 15px size. But since these were on their own without text I felt you would probably hardly notice once you see them in place. Also, they are all the same size, even if they have extra space, so that the mouseover color will show exactly the same size on all.
I guess I cold try at some smaller ones, but not today. []/testimages/icons/wink.gif[/] And they would not be as descriptive, at first I tried doing them that size with no luck. I never really understood the "+" and "-" for collapsed and threaded, this size gave me more room for descriptive drawing.
>> Sixpack69: The main problem with text in the icons would mean that they are not language dependant. And the icons could get really big if you have to write "Threaded view" inside of one of these... I guess if you really want text you can use the ones that have been under use all life long.
>> Kimroan: Yes, you can use them. []/testimages/icons/wink.gif[/] They are *allowed* for use on wwwthreads boards. []/testimages/icons/laugh.gif[/]
They look good MTO! The only missing icon that I can see is one for sending a private message when viewing a user's profile[]/testimages/icons/wink.gif[/].
I've looked at the dev site and I still contend they look too big - they would be perfect at 15 pixels height (and the smaller internal ones should be upped to 15 too).
Well they look quite ok expect that maybe some pixels too big? Well mainly those that threaded icon looks too big even when arrows dont look so big to me.
Thanks MTO - I knew you'd see the light. []/test2images/icons/wink.gif[/] I love the new Send Private 'Reply to post' and 'Edit post' are still only 14 pixels high - is this an oversight? Does 'level up' have to have a tail? I think I'd prefer it without...
The two 14 pixels are unchanged there, I guess an oversight... Got them in this attachment fixed to 15pixels.
As for the "level up" not having a tail... no it doesnt have to have a tail, []/test2images/icons/laugh.gif[/] but I think people relate that more to "level up" than just an arrow going up (maybe related more to "up"). I guess the main reason is because on windows level up is always represented with the tailing arrow... so I think it is better this way. Anyway, I am open to more comments.
New 15 pixel tall icons are great. Maybe these are better now than old ones or what do you think Scream? (mainly threaded/collapsed look more descriptive) :)

Arrows look much better at devel site also expand and collapse are great. About flat and threaded i like current ones more than devel site ones (simpler). Reply and edit post look bit too similar but i guess its quite ok..

I'd like MTO's icons in the distro, personally. I think getting icons into the main menu (admin, main index, search, etc.) would really give W3T that graphical interface that's previously been dominated by text! []/test2images/icons/smile.gif[/]
The more I look at them and the more I'm inclined to stick with the old version of the top ones. The new ones are a bit too busy compared with the clean simplicity of the old ones:
No disrespect for MTO for all of his hard work []/testimages/icons/smile.gif[/], but I agree with Eileen. I think those icons are the "cleanest" looking icons. Simple, graphically pleasing, and functional. They are the ones I would prefer to use.
I agree with 15pixel size and i would want consistant look for icons (tables or |) but there are quite fine now. Also language text placeholders for all icons (including those at bottom of message) even if they would default to "" string.

Yes, I think the old ones are more simple; visually they might even look better. On the other hand I think these new ones are more descriptive, that is also very important. On the other hand, the old ones do not need to be very descriptive when they have text shown with them (not just in the ALT). But to me, if you dont want text with the icons the new ones are better just for being more descriptive. So, if I have to chose within icons (that have no text) I would chose the new ones I made... the only way I would not care as much if they are the old ones is if the text is with them as in these []http://www.amdragon.com/w3timages/oldicons2.gif[/] (that having text you take care for the lack of being a descriptive image).
In any case, I guess you could just let the admins choose the ones they like most. Distribute the 3 choices.
But I think the reason for moving apart from the buttons with text was so that they were less English language dependant... or not?
I vote for old style icons with the new (flexible language-dependent) text description, but couldn't all this be optional, i.e. allow admin to decide which icons to use? Include both sets with the package? Or at least have them at the download center?
Seems testing without table background is going on now with both types of icons (this site and devel) to check how they look and i think they look great (on both sites).. but i think and - icons dont look descriptive but with text you ofcourse know what they mean.. i wonder what is better.. And i just noticed.. Now we running version 5.4b! :)

I have it "on my list" to create a new set of the icons, as transparent GIFs so they will work better on any bg color... and make a light and dark set. I might make the text just a tad larger than I did on the last sets. While I'm at it, I could probably make them in Verdana and Arial to give you some more choices. Anyone interested?
Sure thing. []/testimages/icons/smile.gif[/] I was browsing both forums at the same time and rudely grabbed it from yours. []/testimages/icons/blush.gif[/]
