How can I find out the version I am running... is this information in one of the files or maybe in a table somewhere.

Couple ways. If you haven't removed the version number then you will see it on the lower left hand corner of the screen.

If it's not there then you will want to take a look at the files in your install directory. If it's only a version or 2 old then you should see some altertable files, this should have a version # in the file name that you upgrade to. If you don't see any altertable files then you are probably running one of the first PHP version releases.
