Due to server sluggishness, I changed one of our boards from perl to PHP on Friday night. Installation was rough, because I installed the PHP version, accessed it to test it, and then it caused some table problem and made the perl version not work! I had to upgrade the perl version, run the altertables twice, and then got my isp to help fix the problematic who's online file and then it worked.

However, we're having a host of problems with the whole system now. Namely, [ image ] tags are working about half the time. New and old, they don't all work and we can't figure out why! See this thread for some discussion. (There seems to be some connection with image links with .asp - but we're not sure.)

Also, one of our current moderators - and no new mods - can edit users. Is this a setting I missed?

The boards are also still super slow. :-( And on a weekend, too!

Any help would be appreciated!

- Nancy

Hmm, do you have the allow images option turned on in config.inc.php?

What version of PHP is installed on the server?

As for slowdowns, a few things you can change to help on this part. Threaded mode is much more server intensive than flat mode and I notice you have the default set to threaded. So, you might want to change the default to Flat. Also, you might want to change the default aged threads to display to a lower number instead of all dates so it doesn't have to pull so many threads from the database.

Yes, it's on (1) and also some images work... though many don't. We can't understand it! You can check out the posts on that feedback board for examples.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure. I don't know if this is the only one, but I see mod_php 4.0.1pl2 listed on my system announcement letter, but I think we have non-mod php, too. I will need to get the specifics.

When we discussed this back in March, it seemed like it was sort of user-dependent. I guess I can see how it could go both ways, and we can change that back.

How much would RAM impact the performance of the system? We're running registered versions on 2 different servers, and while both have a lot of problems with speed/load, this server has less RAM and we're having to reboot mysql every couple hours. Ack.

Also, any insight into the moderator control problems I mentioned above?

Thanks so much for your help! Any other speed tips are welcome.

Another thing -- many of the "broken" images are formatted like this:

http://growthspurts.com/image.asp?w=250&image=69496369.jpg

Could that type of URL be unrecognized by the system? (That link won't work - I changed it because the photo wasn't mine - but the real URL worked when viewed directly, just not in [ image ] tags.

Threaded/flat mode can be configured by the user. I was refering to the default view for people who have not logged in. It would probably be best to set the default to flat in the theme.inc.php file.

RAM is probably one of the most important requirements for a sql server. A lack of ram will cause problems much quicker than a slow CPU because when the machine runs out of memory it will start swapping to the harddrive which can really cause some problems. Increasing the RAM if possible will definitely help out.

The moderator problem: Do you have the $config[modedit] turned on in config.inc.php?

Ah, now I see. Yes, this type of image URL is not parsed. The reason being is when you allow a ? in a image url it opens up a wide variety of security holes as they can call scripts and other nasties that can cause some serious problems.

Thanks for all of your help! We will work on getting our users to change their image links, and also are looking into getting more RAM!
