Maybe one of you seasoned vets can go through this and comment it for novices. Later on after some proofreading it can be posted for better instructions.
I am on a unix host.

An FTP client such as WS_FTP, LeapFTP, or CuteFTP.

Using Transmit from panic.com on Mac.

A web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape.

A SQL database on your server space.

getting that taken care of tonight hopefully

Ask your web host:
If you can use persistent connections

What difference does it make in board function?

If your directory is PHP enabled

Which directory? The one where I put all my regular site contents?

Type of database

What do they need to have?

Server name

What do you mean server name?

Username for database
Password for database

I suppose this is different than what I use to FTP in to the server?

Name of database

I suppose you mean the one above you ask what type?

1. Unzip the software zip file to a location you’ll remember on your PC.
2. Open your FTP program and connect to your server.
3. On the server, in your directory, create a folder called “ubbthreads”. All of
the files you will upload can be placed in that new folder.
4. Set the FTP program to upload in ASCII mode, and upload all files and
folders into the “ubbthreads” folder EXCEPT for the images folder and
its contents.

Did 1 - 4

5. Set the FTP program to upload in binary mode, and upload the images
folder and its contents into your “ubbthreads” folder.

step 5 complete

6. If you plan to use cookies rather than browser sessions to track user
activity, you can skip this step. Create a directory called “sessions” above
the web root. If your web host will not allow you to place directories
above the web root, request that the host secure your “sessions” directory
so that it cannot be browsed.

skipped 6

7. Using Notepad, or another text editor, open the uploaded file named
“main.inc.php” (it is not in a subfolder). Look for the first instance of the
$thispath = variable and change it to the actual path of your
UBBThreads™ software installation. Note that you do not need to
include a trailing slash when entering paths.

I put in "/publc_html/ubbthreads" Does it need any more than that I wonder?

8. Using Notepad, or another text editor, open the uploaded file named
“config.inc.php”. You will be looking for items in quotation marks; these
are variables that must be set in order for your message board to function.
You must set the items in Database Variables, Paths & URL Variables,
and Site Specific/Navigation from inside this file; the remainder of these
should be set using the browser-based control panel.

This step is full of potholes and nees further example or explanation in the file.
This is what make installing this kind of thing such a pain and a time waster in guessing
what to do.
Here is a cut of what I've got so far.

// Database Variables

// What type of database are you running
// current options
// mysql, (postgres, sybase are available but untested)
$config['dbtype'] = "mysql";

// Server hosting the database
$config['dbserver'] = "localhost";

// Username that has permissions to the database
$config['dbuser'] = "nobody";

// Password for the database
$config['dbpass'] = "password";

// Name of the database
$config['dbname'] = "WWWThreads";

// If you are using mysql do you want to use persistent connections?
// Note that on some hosted servers you may not be allowed to do this
// so contact your host before setting this to "on"
// Options: "on" - Use persistent: "off" - Don't use persistent
$config['persistent'] = "on";

// ----------------------
// Path and Url variables

// Url to the main UBBThreads php install
$config['phpurl'] = "http://www.properform.com/ubbthreads";

// Relative Url containing the images
$config['images'] = "/images";

// Path to your images directory, needed for calculating image sizes
$config['imagepath'] = "/public_html/images";

// Url to your stylesheets directory
$config['styledir'] = "/stylesheets";

// Path to your UBBThreads php install
$config['path'] = "/public_html/ubbthreads";

// Path to save session information
// This is only used if $config['tracking'] = "sessions"
// Needs to be a world writeable directory outside of your html tree
$config['sessionpath'] = "/home/httpd/sessions";

// Domain that ubbthreads is running under.
$config['referer'] = "http://www.properform.com|http://properform.com";

// --------------------------
// Site specific / Navigation

// Title of site
$config['title'] = "UBBThreads PHP Demo";

// Your Home page URL
$config['homeurl'] = "http://www.properform.com";

// Title of Homepage link
$config['urltitle'] = "home";

// Email address
$config['emailaddy'] = "[email protected]";

// EMail Title
$config['emailtitle'] = "Contact Us";

9. Set permissions on config.inc.php and theme.inc.php to 666.
10. Set permissions on all files in the stylesheets directory to 666.
11. Set permissions on all files in the filters directory to 666.
12. Set permissions on the stylesheets folder to 777.
13. Set permissions on the filters folder to 777.

9 - 13 complete

stopped here until I get the server requirements verified and working at the new host.

14. Open your web browser, and open the file createtable.php (URL will look
something like
http://www.yourdomain.com/yourdirectory/yourthreadsinstallationdirectory/createtable.php)
15. This will create your database tables and bring up a screen with a link to
create your admin account.
16. Click the link and create your admin account. Your password will be
automatically generated and emailed to you.
17. Once you receive your admin password via email, you can begin
customizing your community. The URL to your community should look
like:
http://yourdomain.com/yourdirectory/yourthreadsinstallationdirectory/wwwthreads.php
18. Click the Admin link at the top left of the navigation bar, and you can
begin creating your forums and selecting preferences. For additional
assistance with administering your UBBThreads™ community, see the
UBBThreads™ Administrator’s Guide (available at
http://www.infopop.com).
NOTE: The createtable.php file should be deleted from your server once it
has successfully run and you have set up your admin account.

Barrett
