Hi--

I find the right to left scrolling in the forums a negative making it hard to use for the user.

In other words, the main index appears within the regular screen width, but the forum indexes seem to all need the bottom scroll bar in order to see all the material there.

I'm wondering what value people see in that rating column--it is easy enough to see how active it is by looking at the numbers of replies and thread views. At least this column could be made narrower, methinks.

As far as I know, you can remove this column easily by editing your template (in V6). That's what I'm going to do []/forum/images/icons/wink.gif[/] But at the moment I'm still running 5.4.3 PERL, so this is just a dream for me []/forum/images/icons/crazy.gif[/]

I don't see any scrolling at 800x600 - do you have a column on one side?

this usually only happens if a user posts a large picture or such in your forum.

Not sure what you mean by "do you have a column on one side? "

What I see on the forum list of posts is all but the last digit of the hour of the post and the am and pm. Hence it gives me a scroll bar at the bottom of the screen.

In MSIE 5.5 I have the text size set to "smaller"--any smaller and my old eyes wouldn't be able to read it.

Not sure where to check the other settings. In Win95 Display Properties|Settings, I have Desktop Area set to 800X600 pixels.

Ooops! Sorry, what I am referring to is the postlist, the list of posts for a forum, not an actual post.

That's really odd, I am on win2k, which should pretty much read the same at 800x600 and I don't see any horizontal scroll bars. If you don't mind, when you get a chance, can you get a screen shot so I can maybe see what might be causing it?

I think the screen shot should have been taken with the page a little below...
I am guessing that what is causing it is the "Extra info" section, where the selectors for the "show posts of the last X days", the "go to board" and the search box are all in the same table row. I think these should proably be reorganized so they are not all on the same row. Especially depending on the boards names, the "Go to..." could take a good deal of width.

I would have guessed it was the rating column up above.

Here is a new screen shot showing the bottom of the page. Does it help settle it?

Sure looks to me like it is this bottom part of the page!
Looking at your screenshot there is no way all those 3 selectors could take less width while still being in the same table row.

Yes, I see what you mean.

Am I the only one with this "problem?" Is there a solution?

My screen is at 1024x768, so I dont have the problem, but I understand it could come up. I just tested witn 800x600 and it didnt happen (barely, though), could also be sizes of browser/windows text that affect that row a little more.

Fix? Easy by editing the template. Dont know if the default one will change, as I dont design it. But here is a suggestion:
code:

+-----------------------------------------------------------------+
| Extra Information |
+------------------+----------------+-----------------------------+
| 2 registered | Permisions | Show: |
| 1 anonymous... | You can... | +------------------------+ |
| | You cant... | |from all dates | |
| | | +------------------------+ |
+------------------+----------------+-----------------------------+
| Search forum: | Legend | Jump to: |
| +--------------+ | @ new posts | +------------------------+ |
| | | | @ No new posts | |Board name | |
| +--------------+ | | +------------------------+ |
+------------------+----------------+-----------------------------+

Something like that would do the job.

Thanks!

(Hope that is something for Scream, since it is beyond my understanding anytime we get into code! )

This is probably a silly observation, but I noticed you didn't have your browser maximized?

Otherwise, yes, I can see how v6's "Extras" can create an extra-wide page...
