Is there an easy way, short of modifying the actual code, to remove the post icons? One possible solution presented by one of my members is to just replace all of the images with a transparent *.gif image, but that would be a real pain in the butt to re-create all of them.

Surely there's *got* to be an easier way to do this. []/forum/images/icons/smile.gif[/]

I asked about this on the Infopop site and got this answer from Rick:
In reply to:

As for the posticons. Basically you just need to edit the ubbt_icon_select.tmpl and either remove everything or surround it with HTML style comments. That will get rid of the selection. Then you would just replace book.gif in the icons/newicons directory with the default icon you want to use (folder or whatever).

Unfortunately, when I did this, the size of the icons got messed up, it seemed to be the size of the old icons or something, the new image was stretched out. I had to remove the imagesize and imagestyle from the templates to make it look good.
I also had to change the icon of all posts in the database to book.gif since it otherwised used note.gif or in some rare cases something else, even though I've never had post icons on.
I really hope there is an easier way to do it though.

Well, here's what I did with v5.5

Step 1: Replaced all of the icons with the exception of the poll and lock files with the icon of my choice.

Step 2: Edited newreply.php and newpost.php and removed the icons I didn't want to allow out of the array.

Step 3: Edited addpost.php and editpost.php and removed the icons I didn't want to allow out of the array.

Seems to be working just fine. I'm not doing anything with v6.0 at this point until we get a newer release. I don't want to spend time making a change only to have to change it again when it's released to production. []/forum/images/icons/smile.gif[/]

That sounds about right for v6 as well wraith, you can edit any/all of them out in the post_icon_select template. There's also another one in the alternate temaplte directory you can use that is a drop-down list like in the 5 series.

is that still the process for 6.4?

i'd like to remove the whole concept of the post icons, from their column in the thread list, to the user's ability to select one.

i don't like'em

It's not needed in 6.4 as it's built in functionality. You can add/remove icons from the admin menu.

The only one you can't remove is the book.gif. Just remove all the others and replice the book.gif with a 1x1 transparent gif with the same name.

If you want to remove the icon column, that can be removed from the postlist.tmpl

heya josh!

i just went thru and removed all the icons, but they're still sorta coming up. i mean, the graphics are gone, but...

when users create a new post or reply, they still get that "post icon" pull down option. all the options are still there, despite not having any graphic.

maybe i could just edit the pull down menu out of the templates? it only appears on new post and reply template, right?

Are you modified? There shouldn't be a pull down menu for icons. It's a row of radio buttons that are generated dynamically based on what icons you have.

Try using the ubbt_icon_select.tmpl file that came with threads.

Then if you remove all but the one choice... there will be only one radio button there, the blank icon.

Actually - you're right.... you can replace that template file with a blank file - and then it'll default to a blank icon.
