One of the things I've noticed about the posting window is that specifying a single size as the default doesn't always work. Unfortunately, at different resolutions the box can become either stretched beyond the width of the screen and/or too small depending on whether you have a large or small resolution set in your display settings.

The number of rows isn't really a problem since it can be set to just about anything without a need to really take into consideration the resolution. However, the columns or width is different. Setting it to 100 (for example) works great on a screen set to 1024x768, but it extends beyond the edges requiring a side-to-side scroll bar when you view it on a 800x600 resolution. The ideal setting for 800x600 is something more along the lines of 70.

My question is, would it be possible to specify a percentage instead of a column setting? Much like what is done when specifying the overall table percentage. That way it remains a relative setting and will consisitently look the same regardless of the resolution.

Thoughts?

I'm thinking either A) No one understood what I'm talking about or B) No one is interested.

Which one is it?

Ummmm A.

I'm at 1024x768 so I can't complain.

I am too Dave.

Try an experiment for me and you'll see what I mean. Set your display preferences on this forum to use 100 columns by 20 rows. Then set your display resolution to 800x600 and make a post. You'll see how it really streches out the window. What I'm proposing is that rather than specifying an absolute such as 100 columns, you specify a percentage of the overall table which then makes it relative to the resolution your display is set at.

This is just good website design. When creating tables for my sites, I never specify an absolute unless I need to for a particular design element to work. I use percentages which then allow the window to be scaled appropriately.

I'm not sure but can percentages be used in the column/row settings? I don't think so...

I'm not either which is why I posted this here hoping that Scream would see it and provide a response. I suppose that what I will most likely need to do is set it to something that works for 800x600 since that seems to be the standard these days and then those who have a larger resolution can set it to something more.

I created a page with a text area and specified 100% for the columns and 50% for the rows. Neither work as percentages. In IE it just displayed as if I stated 100 / 50 only.

Looks like I'll have to go with setting the default to the lowest common demoninator.

You could capture screen size with javascript during the new user signup process and when the user is being added to the database set their column/width numbers accordingly automaticly.

Just a thought.

I could, but my knowledge of JavaScript is even less than my knowledge of PHP

I would agree with you. I just don't think you can specify entry fields with percentages.
