I use php for the front page (index) as well, but the content is not refreshing everytime I visit that page.
On the other hand, the ubbthreads always refresh and shows newest content everytime I visit.
Is there any trick to do that?

You can set your browser to request a new copy of all pages visited. This is your browser just using a cached version instead of requesting the page from the server.

Would that also cause the browser to re-download images that it has cached? I'm wondering whether that would significantly increase bandwidth/traffic on the server.

In your ubbt_header.tmpl file place this: <meta http-equiv="expires" content="-1"><meta http-equiv="pragma" content="no-cache">Just after the <head> tag. That should help some.
