If you're having trouble loggin in, or making a post (or any other sort of odd behavior in general)...it's probably a "cookie related issue".

The first thing to check is that you computer's date and time is relatively accurate. If the date or time is way off, the cookies may be expiring...thus causing you problems.

If that does not, then check the following information, and follow the instructions to Manually delete your cookies.

First things first, make sure that your browser's security settings allow cookies to be accepted from our site. The site doesn't work if your browser does not accept cookies. You also must make sure that your browser isn't using cached pages (stored on your hard drive). See the Browser Problems FAQ for more info on Cashed Pages and Proxy Servers. Also verify that your Internet Security settings are allowing information from this site.

If your browser is set to accept cookies, then perhaps corrupt cookies need to be deleted.
The system uses "cookies" on your system to keep track of what messages are new to you, what message you're looking at, what's the next message, etc.... Sometimes, these cookies get "glitched". So while our system is working fine, things are being interpreted incorrectly on your end. So if things seem off, a good fix to most problems is to:
- Click the "Logout" button at the top. (If you were logged in)
- Delete the cookies from "www.ThisSite.com". (See various Instructions below)
- Close your browser's window
- Re-launch your browser
- Visit our home page (this first time back without cookies, re-enter through our home page and not a bookmark you've got saved.)
- Log back in.
That will solve most problems with the system.

I would recommend making a slight change to your language files... offering a link to this "How to Delete Cookies" post. That way, if a user keeps having trouble... it will push them in the direction of trying the cookie thing before they email you. I've used this, and the reduction in Admin email was WONDERFUL!

Make sure you put you "Fix Most Problems / Delete Cookies" post in a forum that can be read by anonymous users as well, so that if someone is having trouble loggin in, they still can view the help.

#
# In your /languages/english/generic.php file, find this:
#

$ubbt_lang['NO_PROCEED3'] = "Please use your back button to return to the previous page.";

#
# Change it to something like this:
#

$ubbt_lang['NO_PROCEED3'] = "Please use your back button to return to the previous page. If you continue to have problems, try deleting your Cookies then try again. Complete instructions for how to delete your cookies can be found <a href="http://PutTheURLToYourDeleteCookieThreadHere.com">here.</a>";

Also, you might wish to install the "CookiePal" by JustDave. This nifty little script will allow users to view the cookie names and values as seen by the script, returned from the browser. The user may then choose to expire all cookies (and be logged out if logged in).

- Download the ZIP file of JustDave's CookiePal is attached to this post
- Unzip and upload to your .threads directory
- Bring he script up in your browser
- View and/or Expire your cookies

If you install JustDave's CookiePal, I would recommend offering a link to it at the top of your "Fix Most Problems / Delete Cookies" thread.... like this:

I think you'll notice that many problems with users browsers can be solved by deleting the cookies.
