Dontcha hate it when you go to all the trouble to find a foreign ftp server that actually lets you log in and download 3 disk images on release day, then find out that the reason the install floppy you made from the boot.img file keeps failing is because the unused floopy was just bad outta the box?

I hate it when that happens!!! hehe

argghh... yes I have a sony mavica that uses 3.5 inch floppy's and getting disk errors on new disks can be pretty irritating

I am very new to the Linux scene. Anyone have any help on getting mysql to work with redhat 8.0? I seem to have a problem with my setup somewhere with the way it was compiled with php. I have mysql access via telnet and the terminal but not via PHP. I selected the options during the install to install the web server (apache) with php, and database server (postgres) with the extra mysql. but apparrently it did not load the mysql.so in the library or it did not load the php-mysql feature. Help please?

Yeah, I'm having issues getting MySQL to work right on redhat 8.0, plus there are other things about it I don't like. I'm getting closer to going back to 7.3, LOL

I was thinking of doing the same thing (IE go back to 7.3) did you do a new install of 8.0 or an upgrade? I was thinking an upgrade install may work from 7.3 since it seemed to work in 7.3?

I did an upgrade from 7.3 to 8.0.

I dunno why I even bothered now, LOL. I liked the look of things better with 7.3 for some reason. Different version of KDE for one thing. Things just worked better overall. I'm running it on an older machine, so I notice quite a speed difference with 8.0, and for what gain? Not enough so far for me. I'll give it another week or so I think before I take the time to reinstall 7.3

I got mine to work by first installing 7.3 (and the GNOME interface) with mysql, php, perl, etc support then doing an upgrade to the server to 8.0 it seems to have worked fine. the problem I had with 8.0 straight install is if you select the mysql database, web server and etc. it does not install all the dependencies properly. by doing the upgrade it appears to have done a good install on everything I need

Oh I install all the web services myself from binary so it is all set up exactly how I want it. I've done it before on another server several times, but this time it's being a pain. I have not even messed with it for a few days now...

err... I am like 3 weeks into linux now hehe so I cant figure out how to install binaries with outh them just messing everything up.... Yet hehe. I like the way that 7.3 would give you the option of installing the dependencies. 8.0 just doesnt install them at all the first time arround (unless you are doing an upgrade installation) it ignores what you tell it to do. (IE I told it no DNS server, Add Database server with Mysql. It added the DNS server by itself and did not add the database server). ALso it seemed to not like the settings I gave it for the firewall configuration and would not save them.

That's one thing I dislked about RedHat was all of the dependency issues. Which is why I switched to Debian. You just can't beat apt-get

my RH7.3 keeps locking up.. its acting more like windows than linux!! I've had the best luck with mandrake 8.2 so far, but haven't tried RH 8 yet. I suppose I could let it download tonight and try it in the morning

When 8.0 came out, I upgraded my 7.3 to 8.0.. a big mistake.. screwed up everything, I went back to 7.3. Today I got brave and built another 8.0 machine and still could not get most of my stuff to work. wiped it out and went back to 7.3 on it and everything is working fine again.. Looks like I just blew 60$ on 8.0

RedHat .0 versions have never been any good, always full of bugs.

I recently did an upgrade anyway though, and am running 8.0 now. The upgrade got screwed up as well, since I didn't have the third disc and had to cancel the installation after disc 2. And now upgrading hangs as soon as it starts to install rpm:s.

I've installed what I know I missed from the third disc and the erratas, but I'm still having problems. The errata kernel seems to hang the computer from time to time. Also, I can't get xmms to work, not even with the info from the bug page, and just recently mpg123 just started working. It did work for a while in 8.0 though. And MPlayer doesn't want to play anything, but that might have something to do with a wrong matrox driver.

Apache has been upgraded to 2.0 as well, so it won't start until I've changed the config file. But I don't think I want to use it anyway, since it might be a problem with php in that version.

Most things are working for me, but there are some strange behaviour which I can live with for the time being I think. Would have been nice to have a completely working system though. *grumble*

This thread is so far over my head. I wish they had Linux classes at the college like they have Windows classes for beginners

Many colleges in Sweden have beginners courses in Solaris, which works in the same way as Linux at that level. But installing and upgrading a system isn't really at beginners level, using Linux for word processing etc nowadays is just as easy as using Windows. Changing system isn't as easy though, the system you already know is always easier to use. =]

Some update on my RH8 install, I've managed to get xmms working now. Besides removing the realplayer module (which is obsolete I think) I had to install an mp3 module as well since redhat doesn't include that. I thought I wouldn't have to do that though, since I had a working copy before.

I also think I might have found the problem why I couldn't do a new upgrade, there was an old install image still lying on the harddrive which might have been defective.

I'm taking a biginners linux class next semester, but I'll probably already know most of what they will cover from my own self-education, hehe Oh well, need it for the computer science transfer requirements...

Oh yeah, more on redhat 8.0. Yucko! I don't even use my linux box now, gonna go burn those debian iso's to disk and try it out. I can always just go back to redhat 7.3 that worked great for me...

I'm sticking with redhat for now at least, though I'm thinking heavily on converting to debian. Just don't feel like doing a complete re-install, especially since I've never even used debian, so I don't know much about it.

I started a course in Visual Basic today. Had a nap for about three hours and then skipped the last one. They won't be covering anything I didn't know lots of years ago. And the lecture hall seats aren't that comfy for sleeping in either. =/ It's an obligatory course though, but I'm gonna try to get credit for it without having to complete it.

Yes, do give debian a try. Let me know what you think It's a bit different in some areas but if you regularly update or install software, you'll love apt-get. I was a longtime redhat user. A little reluctant to make the switch to debian but very glad I did.

Having already installed and framiliarizing myself with linux via Mandrake because of all the reading done it seemed to be the easiest for a windows user to transition with I don't have much to comment on other distros. But, here is a quote that made me chuckle:

"But stay away from the geekier sources like Debian, Gentoo, Slackware, Sorcerer/Source-Mage, and most of the other, lesser known Linux versions."

My momma once told me that if you have nothing good to say say nothing. So I'm kinda going to take her adivce and only say this: I loved RedHat 8.0 sooo much that after 1 day of using it I nuked my box and went back to 7.3

Well, I'm still fighting with the debian install process and getting the basic webserver stuff I want installed.

I do gotta admit that the redhat install is WAY easier with the GUI and all. The debian one doesn't scare me or anything, but it is easier to make mistakes that cause you to start over. Their directions on screen need some newbieness adjustments. I'm on install 2 and maybe I can get it to work this time...

I finally grew so tired of Windoze that I completely nuked my home PC and installed RedHat 8.0. Everything is running just fine. I bought StarOffice and it installed reasonably well (still trying to work out some of the minor pieces). The only thing I can't figure out is how to set things up so I can burn CDs.

I have a CD burner, I've set it up in Grub to mimic /dev/scd0, but I can't for the life of me get KonCD to work. It keeps spitting back error messages. Does anyone know of a nice HOW-TO or tutorial on how to get things working? It would have to be something fairly current since a lot has changed over the years.

I haven't really had any trouble with 8.0. The only thing I run into is trying to install source code. It seems i can't get anything to ./configure. Nothing too major, but I'd still like to figure out what the deal is there. Other than that, it seems to be working pretty good and I'm happy to have gotten completely rid of Windoze on at least one machine I own.

Just found out user quotas are busted in 8.0.
