Ok, so I have Win XP installed.. I know nothing about Linux. So how should I go about, to installing it on my pentium 3 computer, so I'll have a multiboot system. If this is any importance, I have two hard drives, the 80 gb NTSF formated and has xp installed on it. I also have a 40gb and its formated as Fat32. Also is it free or do I have to go out and pay for it? And which one should I go with?

(I might as well learn linux someday )

It is free if you download it (ISO) and burn it to a CD. Or you can buy it in a box already on CD, generally with some type of limited support.

I go for free

You can install it on your system just as it is. Just be sure that whne you go through the installer you tell it not to touch your XP drive, just the second FAT 32 drive. Linux will run on FAT32 or you can reformat it to ext2 or 3, which is native for Linux.

A lot of people say Mandrake is best for newbies, I still prefer RedHat. Scream likes Debian. Honestly I think it's like asking do you like Nestle's or Hershey's chocolate. Both are good, it's just up to your tastes.

Picture perfect penmanship here.

I was new (still am really) to linux as well. I purchased Mandrake from http://www.unixcd.com and setting it up was no more difficult than setting up windows xp.

It's refreshing to be less micro$oft dependant

We run Debian on our server. Very powerfull while still easy to work with.

I also have a dual boot XP/Debian system here at home.

I'm about ready to venture into Linux territory myself. Have an old 486 that I was told will handle it. I'm going to install Red Hat 7.2 because that's what's on the Ensim server that my site is on (with 3 other sites). Once I learn my way around I'm hoping to learn some basic sys admin to help manage it.

I have heard that the download takes FOREVER (6 discs). Since I'm on 28 bps dialup - on a good connection - that wasn't a very attractive option. So I asked around and managed to find a local Linux guru who is going to lend me his discs. Then I can burn a copy here so I can reinstall it if I break it! Hopefully will get to it next week. This should be fun!!!

well if your going to only use command line yes 486 will handle it
but if you want a windows manger you will need to have enough ram something like 64mb or more.
don't even think about using KDE or Gome .

I'm going to learn to do it the old fashioned way - with command lines because I want to learn how Linux works. I'm never one to take the easy road either!!

Has any one tried the new OS called Lindows? They started with Debian but then they made it like Windows. You can even run a bunch of Microsoft products on it like word. They just put it out for the public. I have tried the beta version and it was pretty neet then even with the bugs but now I have the full version that I plan on putting on but it is by no means a server. It is more for the home user but it will get you use to a Unix type of an OS.

http://www.lindows.com/
just my 2 cents

I plan on buying redhat 8.0 Professional and learn how to use Apache for a web server. I am tired of the win2k with IIS5

lindozs lol

well all they do is run wine which you can install on any linux distribution. Now since wine works under gpl any modification lindows might add to it will end up in the version available at winehq.com.

so you are better off using a real distribution

as for redhat maybe you should wait for 8.1 before doing anything since 8.0 is quite buggy right now

Do you believe in love at first sight,
or should I walk by again?

I've finaly installed Mandrake 9.0

I have a program called virtual PC and installed it on XP (so Mandrake is running on top of xp). I also tryed installing FreeBSD, but having some trouble with that.

But its nice, i like how it lets you have 4 different desktops (don't know what you call that ). Still trying to figure it out though
