When was the main thread posted? If it was posted more than 24 hours ago it will not show up no matter how many replies it gets.

I have a work-around for the vanishing random profile. What happens is that the query comes up empty and nothing is displayed and a blank is added to the cache. The way I got around this here was to check to see if the query came up empty and if it did I don't update the field. It seems to be working here. [/]

Dave, when you get that settled.... please share with me.

My profile birthday thing.....
What I do is let the pal box update the data and cache it... then pull it to my ubbthreads.php page (from the cache). But often it ends up coming up blank and the cache gets empty for a cycle.

I'm guessing adding a check like that will solve that blank cache field as well?

I added your language file to IIP and made it so that the user's chosen language is reflected by IIP. I then realized that this won't work on the cached boxes. I'll have to figure something else out to get around this. Once I get this figured out I'll release IIP 5.5

Two questions about IIP 5.3 --

Why do certain users' names show up bold and italicized in the "Last Seen" and "Online" lists? They always seem to be the same users who show up this way, but there's nothing significant about them, i.e. they're not members of any particular group, they're not the top posters, etc.

My "Shout Box" has trouble conforming to the width of the column. The table wrappers are the right size, but inside the wrapper the Shout Box occasionally scrolls sideways, or is both shorter and wider than the wrapper (leaving a big gap at the bottom of the Box). How can I fix this?

Thanks -- I love this mod, by the way. It really impresses new visitors.

The users who show up Bold Italic in "Last Seen" are invisible. I think admins are the only ones to see those users.

I've noticed that sometimes with the shoutbox too.

What usually happens, is someone posts some long string of text somewhere, like "lololololololololoolllolololol" and it blows the box out of wack. It usually goes back when I delete it. Usually the shoutbox is in a narrow column to begin with, so it doesn't take much to make it scroll.

Yep, that was exactly the thing (an Oakland Raiders fan posted something... I probably don't need to say anymore). I deleted it and the box did pop back to normal size.

And thanks for the explanation about the bold italics -- makes perfect sense.

Dave any idea why IIP is displaying the posts not in the order they are listed in this forum?

http://emeraldforestseattle.com/ubbthreads/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=Crier

I have the config set to display the first four posts (at this time there are only three) from this read and reply only forum. They aren't displaying in the correct order. How is this function called?

*edit* After looking into this further I think IIP is picking the posts according to the date of the First post in that particualar thread and not the latest post.Is this the way it is supposed to work? I have my default sort order set to last post and I assumed that IIP pulled the top x amount of posts from whatever category you set?

The display is based on the main post of the thread and it's posted date. I don't currently have an option in to go by "last post" and am not sure when I can work such an option in. If I get some time I'll look it over.

[]IIP FAQ -

Having trouble getting IIP instaled or configured?
Read these FAQ's first. If you question isn't answered, then post it to this thread.

OK - I got it running but it says "Index Closed - we are currently updating this page...". What have I done wrong?
It shows like that until you configure it. Scroll to the very bottom and click on the copyright IIP link (IIP 5.2 by David Lozier ©2002). That'll take you to the configure panel.

I click on the Copyright link and I go to ChattersOnline.
First, make sure you are logged in as Admin. Then, in your config file, make sure your cookies are set site wide. The cookie path should be "/".

There is no configpal.php in my zip!
The first time you run the IIP config panel, it will get created for you.
If you are upgrading, your settings will be updated from your current configpal.php file.

When I edit my config for IIP, my changes don't get saved! OR I get "Warning: fopen blah blah blah Permission Denied"
Try looking at the permissions of the /pals/configpal.php. The file should be 666. If that doesn't work, try 777. You might also need to adjust the permissions of the 'pals' directory to 777 as well.

My Entrance link looks like this: ]http://www.mydomain.com//index.php?Cat=?
Check both the config panel in IIP and your config file in threads for a trailing slash. Remove it, and you should be all set.

When configuring IIP, can you turn off specific components like the Shot Box and have that part not display?

Yes, you can configure and arrange all the pal boxes just as you wish from the IIP config panel. You can choose to not display any boxes you wish.

The index page doesn't seem to change or show the most current information.
If you are running with the "force public" option, you are caching (storing) some of the information used. This makes it faster and uses less queries. When you are caching information, the information only updates every so often, as configured in your IIP setup.
As an admin, you can click on the little green circular arrow in the menu pal, that will refresh the cache and update all the pal boxes.

My private forums are showing up on my front page!!!
Fear not...your private info is still secret. If you are not using the caching abilities (force public) then all access will be based on the user groups. You are seeing that info because you can see those forums normally. A regular user will see only the forums they are supposed to.

I don't want unregistered users to be able to post in the shoutbox.
You can set the option to members only under the shoutbox section of the configure panel.

How do I edit the custom boxes?
Inside your pals directory, edit the files custombox1pal.php, custombox2pal.php, etc.. As needed.

I edited my custom pal boxes and now I am getting a parse error!
If you are including HTML links inside the PHP files, you must be sure to comment out the quote marks (by placing a \ before them), or else they will break the string.

For example.... To insert a graphic in your pal box.... You would need to change this:
<img src="http://www.mydomain.com/image/picture.jpg" alt="Picture" border="0" />

To this:

<img src="http://www.mydomain.com/image/picture.jpg" alt="Picture" border="0" />

You need to insert the \ before each quote in the HTML you will insert. Don't add the \ to any quotes that are already in there.

Sometimes my News gets "cut off" or stops short.
Try turning off the "strip HTML" options for the newspal settings.

My Random Profile doesn't seem to be that random. It kind of just ends up displaying a few users.
When you setup the Random profile, you have the option to require certain fields. Don't check too many of those boxes. It's best to pick a field or two. If you are too strict and require too many fields to be complete, then there won't be that many profiles to choose from in the random rotation.

I have my Hot Topic cache set to 10 minutes and 5 replies. I have refreshed my cache, but it still will not show up as a hot topic.
If the main thread was posted more than 24 hours it will not show up no matter how many replies it gets. Hot Topic only looks at threads posted in the last 24 hours.

Why do certain user's names show up bold and italic under last seen?
Because they are invisible users. You are seeing them because you are an Admin.

My Shout box has trouble conforming to the width of the column. Sometimes I have to scroll left and right.
Usually this is because a user has entered a very long shout without any spaces and it doesn't wrap, thus stretches things out. Just simply delete the shout by clicking the little "X" next to it, and it should go back to normal.

The news pal doesn't seem to list the posts in the order that they are in my forum.
The display is based on the main post of the thread, not replies. If you have dateslip on in your forums, then they will be ordered by the date of the most recent post. This setting does not affect IIP.

Will there be more features?
Sometime in the future, (Release date, sometime this year.) JustDave plans to offer IIP Pro for sale. It's still in the works now, so stay tuned, but the main features of IIP pro will include:
1. Calendar (master/board/personal)
2. Picture Gallery (master/board/group/user)
3. Link Directory (master)
4. News/Reviews section (master)
5. Dedicated File download/upload area (master/board/group)

Other features:

1. Fully templated (XHTML compliant, of course)
2. Complete text seperation via language files
3. RSS news feed generation and external fetching (master/board)
4. Revised "swap language on the fly"
5. Dedicated "Admin" area (this just keeps growing)
6. Revised cache table (use rows, not columns)
7. Configureable "menu" system to simplify adding additional links

More features:

Yeah there is other things implimented or planned on that I can't think of at the moment... LoL

Thanks Josh

Hey gang,

I am having a problem with my install... I began the setup of the entrance page, but had to stop half-way through because I couldn't back up my DB (so I never modified my DB files). Now that I have done that, every time I try to get to the IIP control panel I get taken to ChattersOnline, and the entrance page has a Login link on it. If I click that I am taken to the profile for whoever I am logged in as, meaning the cookie is taking over and working as expected. I have tried logging in as myself (an Admin) and as the first Admin, but neither works.

I have my cookie path set to "/" for site-wide cookies.

Any help greatly appreciated, as I would like to finish my setup!

Ok... figured this one out. Turns out if I go to the index.php from the ACTUAL server name, rather than the domain name, it works fine. Must be some cookie naming issue.

However, now I am trying to edit the custom box phps and keep getting a "Cannot instantiate non-existent class: html" error... what is this from?

Cheers,

Chris

Yeah..... cookies from different domain names on your site will be different and cause problems. Even as simple as using the domain with and without the www will cause problems.

What exactly are you trying to do to the custom box that's giving you that error?

I was trying to load it into the browser, because it seemed to me that that is what the instructions were saying to do. But now I realize (hope this is correct) that I just need to hand-edit the php file, right?

But... I am not sure where to put the "body" text for the page... should I be replacing the contents of one of the strings in the customboxXpal.php?

Thanks!

Yeah, hand edit those files....

If you are editing custom boxes 1-3 (those can be cached) then you put the contents of you box into:

$TempStorage .= "blah blah blah blah";

Boxes 4-6, put your stuff into the echo statement.... second line from the bottom.

Hope that helps.

Ack! Ok, now the cookie thing is causing other problems, I think...

I added a poll, but whenever anyone tries to vote the entrance page table gets hammered and you get a message saying:

We cannot proceed.

The host you are trying to send the input from is not a valid host. Please use your back button to return to the previous page.

It seems that you are having problems with cookies.

It might be an idea to switch to sessions... (config.inc.php file)

The invalid host is a referer problem. Try turning off the referer check option in the admin config settings before you disable cookies and try sessions.

You can either turn off the refer check in your config file... OR they can adjust their firewall settings to allow the referer information to pass to threads.

Check out about halfway down this document for more details.

Thanks gang...

Turns out the person who setup the boards used the direct domain host's computer names rather than our domain name in the config.

Changed that and suddenly everything works!

However... now I have another question. Is there a FAQ or a post on how to modify the Menu box?? I'd like to do some hacking on it, and can probably figure it out, but some info would sure save me some time and effort!

Cheers to you all for the great input, and to JustDave for a killer script!

The files you should be looking at are in your templates/default folder

ubbt_registerednav.tmpl for the users logged in and
ubbt_unregisterednav.tmpl for the users not logged in

You might also want to alter your language files to give more flexibility to your users.

Hi Nikos,

If that was for me, I think there is a misunderstanding. I do not mean the menu bar supplied by UBB.threads, but rather the Menu box in IIP.

Cheers,

Chris

Sorry Chris,

You should be looking at the pals/menupal.php file then. All the menus are contained in there.

However a word of caution on the work that might lie ahead. If you change the menupal.php and would like to add functionality similar to the "File Downloads" or "Recommend Us" i.e. click on the link and the page reloads with a different window on the middle/right section, then you will need to change the index.php file as well.

Warm regards

Thanks Nikos,

That will get me started... a tutorial on this would be really helpful, especially for those of us who are coders but have little experience with PHP...

To add stuff to the Menu box, you need to edit /pals/menupal.php.

Look for the last line:

echo "$tableEnd</td></tr>$tbclose<br />";

Just ABOVE it.... you can add stuff like this:

echo "$rowStart<a href="http:www.whatever.com/mypage.html">My Page</a>$rowEnd2";

You can add as many lines like this as you wish, to add them to the menu box.

It is important to ensure that for each " (quote mark) which occurs inside of 'echo "    "; has a \ in front of it, so it doesn't break the string.

Hope that helps.

I have added this info into the IIP FAQs - second post of this thread.
